Lightbulb Mazda MX-5 Miata License Plate LEDs! Several Model Options! Plug & Play Install!

Mazda MX-5 Miata License Plate LEDs

(MS3 Shown as Comparison)

License plate bulbs are used to illuminate the rear license plate on your Mazda MX-5 Miata. From the factory, the bulbs are incandescent, lighting up in a yellowish color.

Newer luxury cars use LED modules to illuminate the license plate with modern, cool white light. By changing your license plate bulbs to LED, you can easily add this luxury look to your MX-5!

The installation is 100% plug-and-play, just replace your factory bulb.

With low price and easy install, this is one of the best, easiest modifications you can do to improve how your Miata looks at night.

Brightness:

Diode Dynamics offers several bulb options so you can choose what fits you best. These options are listed by the design and the lumen output of each bulb:

SMD2: Slightly higher brightness than OEM bulbs. (24 lumens)
HP3: Much brighter than OEM bulbs. These are bright! (56 lumens)
HP5: Nearly triple the brightness of stock OEM bulbs! (92 lumens)

Bulb Design:

SMD2: Compact design, with two 5050-size Epistar SMD chips, driven at high power for maximum effective brightness. Outputs at 180 degrees.

HP3: One high-power SMD under a diffusing lens for truly even output (no hotspots). Constant current design and air-cooled base for superior reliability. Features dual contact pins and nonpolar function for easy installation.

HP5: Four high-power SMDs, under a diffusing lens. Just like the HP3, but run at higher power, with integrated copper plating for superior heat dissipation, allowing maximum brightness.

These bulbs are made up of a quality plastic connector to slide right into the plug, as well as high durability terminals. A load resistor is embedded to prevent blowing the LEDs from voltage surge, and a diode is implanted to protect the LEDs from reverse polarity. The LED is wired for 12V operation, the kind found on all vehicles.

Included in your order is TWO BULBS (to fit your Miata).

All of our products come with a 30-day satisfaction guarantee and a 3-year limited warranty.

For license plate lights on these cars, polarity of wires must be flipped for LEDs. How about for these?

This.

Do you have them for an NA?

Our 194 HP3 and HP5's feature a non-polar design, which means they won't require a specific polarity in order to light up as intended.

The NA uses an 1156 sized bulb, which is very odd....typically 1156's are used for turn signals, tail lights etc...

There's not much room in that housing with the lens cover on, so our HP11 and XP80 won't fit that location.

Our brand new HP48 1156 bulb is non-polar, and is also CK-compatible. The only concern would be the overall length of the bulb, however, the diffuser-lens could be removed to make it even shorter.

Feel free to shoot us a PM for more information. I'd be happy to send you a set of our new HP48's to an NA owner to confirm they will fit the license plate location. (First come first serve!)

The HP48 wasn't available when we had the Miata in our studio many months back

Thanks,
Nick C.

I asked the above question which arrow asked on. I have an NA and would be willing to be the experiment car!

Looking forward to this. Switching the polarity on the housing isn't difficult, just tedious. Especially if you have shakey hands like mine. Would like a simple PnP solution.

The only thing is question is the overall length of the bulb. The HP48's are both non-polar, and CK-compatible

Update: the HP48 bulbs are slightly too big with the white diffuser lense. However, if you pull it off, and just run it as a naked LED light, it fits perfectly! I have them on my car right now.

They are a cool and crisp white with not a hint of blue or yellow. White in their purest form. They also seem brighter than stock. I can't do a good comparison since one of my plate lights were out already lol! (The lights also work as reverse lights, I tested them)

The guys at DD are great! Nick's customer service is probably the best I've ever seen. They even sent a FREE t shirt in my box that I WAS NOT expecting. Stellar work Nick and thank you again!

I'm going to try to post up a thread with pics later in the week, or I'll just post them in here.

That's extremely good news, I'm glad to hear it fit!

With regard to the license plate bulbs for an NA...

I have bought all kinds of bulbs from you guys so I always try to give you my money first, you've always been very good to me. I was actually just in your showroom talking about these bulbs a couple weeks ago. So with that in mind I'd also like to share what research I've done on this topic, because if you developed a plug and play LED license plate bulb for the NA, you would be the only company producing this product in the world (as far as I can tell)

So the bulb is a BP89. Like you said normally a turn signal bulb, but shorter so it fits. It's a weird bulb. The ones you sell are not only probably too big, but also too expensive to be justifiable ($40 vs $5 for other cars)

I bought these from ebay for $10 hoping for the best:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/LED-Car-Bulb...WV49PA&vxp=mtr
Picture for reference:

As expected, they were not plug and play. I'd have to reverse the wires. But even if they were - look how tall they are. They're approximately the same height as the BP89 traditional bulb, but the LEDs are on the end pointing straight out - this is a problem because installed, there's about about 1mm of clearance the wall inside the housing, so the light will shine straight at the wall and not toward the license plate.

So here's what you'd need to do, and I work in Earth City so if you'd like I can bring by my car and the competitor's product for you to look at, but if you were to develop this product for NA miatas...
  • Bulb must have the polarity reverse of normal to ensure plug-n-play
  • Bulb must be as short as possible, using the metal base of the BP89 as the minimum
  • LEDs must either have a diffuser (ideal) or be angled toward the license plate (probably not feasible)

I'm not an expert in LEDs but I've seen what you guys can do and I have faith you can engineer this product. Plug-and-play license plate lights for an NA Miata may be a niche product but... wouldn't you like to be the only company in the world producing it?

If I can help in any way let me know. I'd love to run some of your LEDs on my new Miata (my 350Z is already fully decked out).

We've already confirmed with a member on the forum that our new HP48 will fit the license plate location of the NA and NB

You will have to remove the diffusing lens on the HP48 (The bulb itself is really short). The HP48 is compatible with both CK and standard sockets, so you won't have to rewire anything either.

@zetto156, come visit us and I'd be happy to show you in person

Great, I can swing by for sure.

I think I may have looked at that when I swung by last time though - it was $40 for the pair right? And wasn't it many, many times brighter than the normal license plate lights? I could have been shown a different bulb, but I know the ones I was shown last time were going to be way too bright to be reasonable as well as way more expensive that other license plate bulbs.

The HP48 is our newest LED bulb replacement

It will have similar output to the factory incandescent bulbs FWIW

That sounds great. What are those running in terms of price? You can PM me a quote if necessary.

They retail for $40/pair

Again, 1156 is not your typical license plate bulb size. Blame Mazda for using a turn signal in the license plate location lol

I'm not sure why Mazda decided to use such a large bulb for that location
