If I were you, I'd have an inspection done.
Oil change ? Have brakes greased (mine ALWAYS break on long trips lol) ? Verify all fluids... |

I would just check the seals and hoses, if they aren't leaking and feel pliable you should be fine. A coolant flush and oil change should be sufficient, although overheating this time of year shouldn't be an issue.

Does the car leak oil? Have you done any maintenance?
If it doesn't leak I wouldn't worry too much... Have you done the timing belt? If the car doesn't have any service history and has 200K on the clock I would do timing belt and water pump (and if you are there change the seals too). What is the TB? Do you mean throttle body? |

By inspection, I mean full inspection. It may be costly, but you'll know exactly what needs to be done on your car.

Check the fluids, belts & hoses. If all is well (and you've been keeping up with the regular maintenance), just get out there & enjoy the drive!

I would check your tie-rods and balljoints. Wouldn't want one of those to let go 700 miles from home. Also, like everyone else has said, make sure all you're fluids are good.

How many miles ago was the timing belt changed? If you're right at the 60,000 mile mark or maybe a few thousand over, you'll be OK to just let it go until you get back from the trip. Many people go 70k-100k miles before changing it and have no problems; I wouldn't do this. I personally would change it if it was at or over 60k, but that's just me.
How old is the coolant? If it's more than 2-3 years old I'd change it or has more then 30,000 miles I'd change it. Change the oil before your trip unless it's not due until a mileage that you suspect you won't surpass on your 1400 mile trip. Check your tires for tread life; I wouldn't go on a 1400+ mile journey riding on tires that are down below 5/32 of an inch, but that's just me. 3/32 and sometimes 2/32 is considered "worn out". Make sure there are no gashes down to the belts or sidewall threads. Check for nails or any other tire issues such as tread separation, or irregularity. Tire problems are a safety issue that you'll need to address now, or else hundreds of miles from home on the side of the road. They could also indicate worn suspension components. Lift up the car and inspect for worn out or broken bushings, balljoints, tie rod ends outer and inner. How thick are your brake pads, front and rear? Take the wheels off and inspect the pads. Look for fluid leaks and have a look at the brake lines to be sure they aren't damaged, cracking or coming apart. Check the rest of the brake system for leaks too. How old is the brake fluid? If it's over 2-3 years old or has over 30,000 miles on it I'd flush it out. Clutch fluid as well, 2-3 years or 30,000. How's your alignment? Long highway trips might get rough if the car tends to pull, and you might be killing your tires. |

Order up a complete kit from one of the numerous vendors over on ebay...less that $100 and you get everything you need. WP..Belt..idler pulleys..cam seals and front main..valve cover
Ricks Engine Parts is a good one to try...we installed 6 of these kits over the last couple years. He might be stocking Miata kits again...he was out a couple months ago. |

So, where are you going?
I'm going to have to go down to SoCal in about a month for my Grandma's funeral and am heavily considering b-lining it down there on I-5 and then taking the PCH (Highway 1) on the way back. I've yet to take my Miata on a long road trip and this would end up being about 2300 miles round trip. |
