Default 1500kms of Scotlands Highlands

Me and my brother, Chris went on a camping/driving trip

we left Fife in the MX5 on monday morning around 8am and headed out to stirling, then on to Callander for steak and haggis pies. then on to Crianlarich, Fort william, Applecross (camped overnight), Sheildaig, Achnasheen, Ullapool, Lochinver, Durness (camped here), Thurso, Dunnet head, John 'ogroats, Wick, Dornoch, Dingwall, Inverness, Cannich (found a great campsite here), Nairn, Forres, Grantown on spey, Ballater, Braemar, Pitlochry then back down the A9/M90 to Dunfermline!

car says we've done just under 1500kms, without working it out i think we used roughly 3 tanks of fuel, £120-130 of fuel.

heres the map

http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&so...,1.307373&z=10

heres some pics

Arriving at Bealach na ba around 2pm on Monday

Half way up to Applecross

Leaving Applecross on Tuesday morning we stopped at a place called 'Sand' and went down onto the beach

once we got to the other end of the beach there was no way up excepet to climb, UGH, we made it eventually!

Then we moved on to Lonbain where there is a row of old crofts, one still has the roof on it and was alledgedly last lived in in the 80s

this is the interior

met these guys on the road

some more photos of the coastal road heading north out of Applecross

You can see Raasay on the right and Skye behind that

looking over to the Isle of Rhona

The scenery at Kyleskew

After leaving Durness on the Wednesday morning we found this beach on the road out

the road we had to travel to come past Tongue

At the most northern point of the UK Mainland, Dunnet head

then at John O'groats

Looking out to Stroma

and thats it, we didnt really stop that much after we hit the A99/A9

would like to go back to Durness area in the better weather

That's a pretty epic adventure for a roadster. Great photos, I would love to visit the highlands.

I must be completely ignorant, but I was surprised to see non-metric signage.

Neat trip in either case!

Nice pics, lovely place. I've only been in Edinbräck (Edinbourgh) from where we drove south via coast. Skye and other Whisky islands would be great places to go, specially if sittin as co-driver

Thanks for sharing the story and pics. Sounds like an amazing drive. I want togo back there so badly. I have only been along part of that route... from Denny up to the Isle of Skye. Completely amazing. 3 shots to add to the thread if ya don't mind...

along the route posted: Eileen Donan castle, used in Highlander the movie

Urqhart castle, on Loch Ness, just up the A82 from your route.

and of course, more highland cows, near Dunvegan Casle, on the Isle of Skye:

Anyone else find those cow things pretty cute? Almost look like something out of a cartoon.

So picturesque.... must be orgasmic to drive in, these roads.
Somehow I envision Escort rally cars wailing away on those twisties.

Scotland is so freaking big compared to Ireland. I put 2000km on a Fiat 500 and just loved my entire trip, driving. I am planning a trip to Scotland and just need to map out where to drive...and what car to rent
