Default 2014 Mazda Miata - First Look

Future is promising...

Quote:
Mazda is getting ready to overhaul the Miata with a turbocharged 4-cylinder engine and a more muscular exterior. A new 1.3-liter engine using Mazda’s fuel-saving SkyActiv technology is going to power this fourth-generation Miata roadster. The engine should be significantly lighter and more efficient than the 2.0-liter 4-cylinder that does duty in the Miata range here in the U.S.

2014 Mazda Miata
This rendering of the 2014 Miata hints that Mazda will keep the overall proportions of the current model. Narrower headlights and a larger grille provide a modest front makeover. A sharp character line extends from the headlights back along the sides of the car, before tapering off near the door handles. It’s a clean shape, one that’s a little less delicate than before but not overwrought with details.

Back to Basics.
This represents a return to form for the simple Miata, which first went on sale more than 20 years ago. The new 2014 Miata should shed a few pounds, thanks to the use of lightweight materials in the chassis—along with that smaller engine. Mazda is making a big deal about SkyActiv, and we were impressed with the technology when fitted to the updated Mazda3 compact.

2014 Mazda Miata
A high compression ratio, direct injection, and reduced internal friction will help endow the lighter SkyActiv-equipped Mazda3 with better power than one might initially expect, and fuel economy (when compared to the 2.0-liter inline-4) is boosted by approximately 15 percent. For the record, the Mazda3 SkyActiv sedan returns an impressive 40 mpg on the highway (EPA) when equipped with the 6-speed automatic. A 6-speed manual is also available.

Look for the 2014 Mazda Miata to offer the same gearboxes. A manual soft-top should continue, and a power-operated folding hardtop will likely join the range at some point. There is a possibility that Mazda will offer further details about this all-new 2014 Miata at the Geneva Auto Show in March.

Sounds like it's going to be a pretty sweet deal.

If a 3000lb mazda3 can get 40mpg with a 2.0l skyactive why the f*ck did they put a 1.3l in? It's an all aluminum engine, weight difference would be within 20lbs. Being stuck with a 1.3l sucks dick. These will be fun stock, absolutely horrible for tuners.

Blah.

Other than that though I dig the looks, and it's nice they are keeping it light.

I like it.

While the 1.3 is not a tuner's dream, that's the future. We'll all have to find ways to make it fast regardless.

The 2.0 already would meet new regulations. It's been proved by countless companies there is no need to go this small. It's backwards thinking. High Cr direct injection motors can get the mileage and power from a 2.0 easily. Heck even a 1.6 would have been greatly welcomed. Hyundai even did it. It's a pretty big fail. The bigger ones better swap in.

Good thing it's just another one of the tens of impressions/renditions.

Guys, if we were able to swap 2.3 and 2.5 into NC, I bet doing 1.6 or 1.8 into this one will be feasible.

Hopefully, they'll offer a variant for North American customers.

If it has a 1.3l.. is it going to be cappuccino size?

Aside from the Veloster sized grille.. it's pretty good.

1.3 is a magic number isn't it? .....but if they're going for mileage and efficiency, there's no way it could be a rotary

If it had a Fiat badge on the front, I'd have believed being told it was the new Barchetta. Or a Volvo or Saab badge and i'dve believed that, but it doesn't really look like a new MX5 to me. The MX5 is supposed to look sleek, but this looks more like it's been on the protein shakes and bodybuilding...

I'll stick with my NA

It has potential IMO. Black out that grille, remove the emblem, lowered with dark wheels / wider setup and lip would make this menacing. And hell yes for better MPG - that's always the deal maker for me.

well 1 possible benefit of the lower volume is higher rpm. With it boosted, and if you can tune it to 250-300hp and minimizing lag. you get the best of both worlds, sipping fuel at idle/cruise speed. And torque + higher rpm for track days

Honda is the only 4cyl i've seen on the market that has done this with the b16/b18c & s2000 motor. I've seen Merc/bmw do a 10k rpm, but again your looking at a 60-120k car.

Factor in the target market of 20-25k loaded. Cafe requirements, this car needs to hit the market of not just the enthusiast, but an enthusiast that has a family.

D.I.N.K.S are also a growing market as well. But nobody in the USA wants to pay 60-70$ in gas as the final decision maker..

in Short. Sales = Market share penetration, Fuel/Performance being the balancing factor. aftermarket has already proved if you want more power/performance that segment will pay the additional 5-10k to custom their ride.

aesthetics falls under Market penetration as well. We all seen how well the Pontiac AZtek did... even recent decade s2000 sales dipped due to the better electric roof in the Miata... so Mazda is doing it right. It's just unfortunate that a majority of the weight is safety.

I would like to see a club Edition, at exact same price as the loaded. but with an off-set of harness+rollbar+quick release wheel package+FIA Seat, in place of air-bags...

I dont necessarily believe that rendering is from mazda... no way in hell would they release a concrete model introduction like that without releasing a design sketch/rendering set or announcement.

the problem with these "illustrations" is that they are just whoever had photoshop, and chopped parts from other mazdas together to make their own prediction.

mazdas official model might be wayyyyyyy off from this. though the specs are probably true

Yea, having google'd "brenda priddy and company" who own the renderings, they are a company that specialise in photographing the test cars. probably just saw a car in that test camo stuff that looked similarly proportioned to an MX5 and found the Mazda details, put them together with their interpretation of what the car might look like... Hopefully they're wrong.

I don't buy it. If R&T is putting it out and all the pages that have a better history of breaking real images (like Jalopnik or other blogs) haven't put anything up, I don't buy it. Seriously, when is the last time a dead tree purveyor broke anything before the blogs? Maybe it is wishful thinking but I don't see anything looking like that coming from Mazda and being Miata. The car has a looooong history of not being agressive/angry looking/heavily styled. I don't see them changing that now after 20 years of solid success.

These renderings look an aweful lot like the last time someone posted this information. I really doubt this is it. Its obviously a rendering, and I'd sincerely hope Mazda realizes how dumb it is to use a 1.3l when their larger engines get such great mileage.
