Stay away man. I've owned 3 of the MKIIs which are much less complicated and easier to work on and it was still a love/hate ownership. I hate to say this, but if you want something FWD go with something jap like a Honda (yup, a Honda, sorry, but they are well built).
If you are aiming for an E30 or E36, as was suggested above, just drive the NA and save up. And BTW, Bimmers love to rape wallets as well, but at least they are much better cars than VWs. And most importantly, they are also RWD. |

You know, why screw around. I've got a nice PT Cruiser I'll sell you. If you take out the back seats, you can put an entire Miata in one. Or a suitcase of cash ... dealer looks for those, you wait less for oil changes.
Less reliable than a Jetta, yet paradoxically more expensive to repair. I humbly suggest it's perfect for you. Example: Dealer wants $700 for a radiator fan, yet the radiator fans break on every single example on the road. None the less, no dealer stocks them. See? You'll be in car-less heaven far more often than that Jetta thing. You gotta think big, man. Hey, it was built when the Germans were running the show. That's why you need special coolant. Since that's obviously the direction you want to move, I can effectively double his offer. I only wish it was an automatic trans ... that would TRIPLE the offer. Because it needs special ATF, or a week after you put in some generic stuff, the auto transmission explodes. (Unless you use the special ATF in the power steering instead of the generic stuff. Then the PS pump explodes). Just ask any Ram owner ... they deleted the ability to even order a manual trans in the gas engine trucks. Reason was something about being "too reliable". Home ownership is a con anyway. Why drive a cheap, reliable, fun car like a Miata while saving up for an asset of nebulous value? Medical emergencies? Google "self-surgery". Retirement? Getting old is a myth ... you're immortal. Give the money to the Germans ... no, wait ... Italians instead. |

I don't really know the condition of either your miata or the jetta, but in my area the least expensive miata right now is $3400, and the most expensive (non dealer) 2001 jetta is $3500. So I don't really know if you're going to "make" any more money. You also at this point probably have to fix your car, if the Jetta owner has to "talk to his dad", I doubt his parent is going to let him trade for an already broken, much older, less safe car.

I'm suprised you used to have an E30, went to a miata, and miss the E30.
I used to have an E30...and 37 other cars before my NA, and the only car I sorta miss from the bunch is an 85 RX7. No way I would go back to the E30 from the miata...EVER. |

I think you should trade it. If you're going to drift into curbs you belong in a FWD car anyways.
Also, your concept of directions is clearly flawed if you think going to an E30 is trading 'up' from a miata. |

And on CL here, theres about 5 VR6s on there ranging from 4500-6000 And about being broken, I put in a new control arm today which was one of the problems, but I'm pretty sure it has a bent tie rod because the wheels seem to like veering off left or right if I let go of the steering wheel. |

dude, clean is obiously subjective. i can get an outwardly nice car for under a grand here. cut the springs, give it a wash and it might be worth 4x what you paid to the OP. get some cash with the miata to fix the dorifto damage.
