It's a lot less dirty, yes, definitely, but it's still not perfectly clean and particulates are hard to control. I don't know how much urea injection does, but that's on pretty much everything now too. Your 2003 light truck is much much cleaner than say a semi tractor from the 80s.

Those markets are hot for diesel because they can get insane mpg figures (75 mpg passenger cars are not uncommon) and enough torque from very small displacements to make the cars usable even with such crazy efficiency. The fuel itself is also less expensive than gasoline.

It's literally all about dollars and cents. Well, I guess, Euros and yen. Yes, there's also a reliability factor, but I don't think it's about that.

Biodiesel has none of the health issues, btw. Otto Diesel originally intended his motor to be fueled by peanut oil so that farmers could grow their own fuel.

Dino diesel was basically a waste product until they managed to get diesel cycle motors to run on the nasty stuff.

I don't disagree with your history or science lessons. However my post was about a brand new Mazda truck (we don't get those anymore) with new diesel technology (which we don't get enough of in the US) and lamenting both facts (as did the author of the article).

US could use better mpg vehicles. Diesel is cheaper than gas here (generally). Modern diesel engines have better longevity than gas engines. AND you can run them on biodiesel (like I used to do in my diesel truck) which is even "greener".

All I'm saying is I wish we had that new Mazda truck here, in diesel form, as the article was introducing.

I want a diesel minitruck. The Chevy Colorado/GMC Canyon duramax exists but is silly expensive and there isn't really anything 'mini' about it. I love the seating position, though. Very reclined for a truck.

My uncle just plopped down $75k for a 2017 Ford F350 diesel. Diesel is awesome.

I don't disagree, we miss out ona lot of awesome vehicles here. I just didn't realize how big an issue diesel emissions are in Europe until the diesel-gate coverage.

There is a write up on M.net as to how your supposed to do it. I've considered doing it at my next oil change but I'm not 100% sold yet.

Did they sell an e36 328i coupe in the US?

Edit: Yup. My CL skills aren't very good.

I like E34s. They tend to be in better shape than most E36s and are not subject to swag tax like E30s. Fairly reliable as they come from the era where the cars were somewhat over-engineered and didn't have too many electronics. For a daily I'd look for a 525i with the M50 engine.

All of them.

But really, the reliability of any BMW has 100% to do with how well wear parts have been replaced. You will pay for deferred maintenance sooner or later.

3 series have the least features. I feel like the electrics are always the first thing to become... Quirky.

Get a six cylinder motor, whatever else you do.

Edit: except for the new turbo platforms, after the warranty period. I think they are just going to be disposable items after 150k or so.

Soooo.........what do you believe current 2016 Mazda 3's should be priced at with the new 2017 models arriving next month? I need a car right meow, but if I'm going to pay MSRP prices, I'd rather wait 1 month for a redesigned model. Really like what they are doing with it by matching the front end closer to the CX3. I would have bought a CX3 if they had a manual option.

I've got some money to spend on my Miata. I've got everything else set, but have a toss up between motor or suspension. Current motor has 190k miles on it. Suspension is stock.

I can either:

1. Buy a lower mileage 1.6L or 1.8L, do the maintenance to the engine and transmission, and save the rest for an eventual suspension upgrade

2. Buy the suspension I want and save up for a motor swap later

Thoughts?
