My '90 has 202K on it and I have no desire to swap it's engine out. There's nothing wrong with it. I'd vote for suspension/tires/brakes and keep the current engine maintained well.

2. Buy the suspension I want and save up for a motor swap later

If compression and leak down numbers are good, I'd do suspension.

Suspension is a nice self-contained upgrade that can go as low as several hundred $ to $1k or so (unless we're talking super high end, natch).

Engine swap is a slippery slope. I couldn't stop myself upgrading motor mounts, getting a heavy duty clutch and lightened flywheel, replacing all the cooling hoses, radiator, and doing a bunch of work to the incoming motor, etc. Never mind 'necessities' like FM swap kit, 1.8 header, and things that I can't remember.

I spent 3x what I did on the swap vs my suspension.

I bought this in September of 2014. It didn't go well.

I need to edit that. I bought it September of 2014. The body was completely rotten, as it had been stored with the top down for the better part of 20 years. I paid $300 for it. I got the bright idea to strip what I could off of it and sell it, since all the trim was still there and in great shape, but 2 years later and I still have TR6 parts floating around my garage.

Large hats off to you if you can make a double or triple carb British straight 6 fit in there. I have jokingly toyed with the idea but concluded that it just wouldn't fit being too tall and too long. It seems like the longest engine that would be feasible and straight would be a Volvo straight 5. But if you make it work, document the hell out of it.

Oh no, the TR6 was a heap I tried to part out two years ago. I no longer have the car or the engine.

Besides, I think it would bring the reliability level way down lol

The 540s can be had for 3-4k around here. Still, not as depreciated as that. Damn.

When I lived back east I'd alway road trip south to buy cars. Beaters are so much nicer to wrench on when they don't have any rust.

Indeed, plenty of 540s to be had for cheap - a lot more potential issues on the V8s though. For a beater I think I'd stick with an I6.

Can anyone who has an ND comment on the throttle response? I drove a GT earlier today and the delay between blipping the throttle and the engine actually doing something was immense. Made heel-toeing absolutely impossible. Is this a feature of the drive by wire or something they tuned out for the Club/Club Sport?

Weird. I've only driven our Moss Club and I'd say throttle response is instantaneous.

Huh. Blipping the throttle had a noticeable lag between blipping the pedal and the RPMs doing anything.

Sounds almost like a defective encoder or something. I don't understand how that's possible, I thought they were optical but I admit to knowing little about Mazda's system.

The M3 has no perceptible lag, and that's old tech.

Maybe I just have to break down and drive one. Can't hurt.

I'd love to take an ND for a test drive, but the closest Mazda dealership is about 45 minutes away.

It's worth it. I drove a GT and fell in love as soon as I left the lot. I hear the Club Editions are the way to go FWIW.

I'm afraid to test drive one, because then I'll want it, and I already promised my wife would get the next car since the last...oh I don't know....3 have been mine.

I'd never buy Benz for 32 grand. I mean, if you have to have the cheapest of the middle expensive, you're trying too hard.

For 32 grand you can have one hell of an AWD Taurus. Or a Chevy SS.

Okay so for NASA, I have to have a master kill switch easily accessible from the exterior of the vehicle and have been looking for a while as to what these external ring/cups are called/where to find them. I'm assuming they're the same principal as an alternately mounted fuel door/spout for an aftermarket fuel cell (being the same metal ring trim) but have no idea what to call them/where to find them.

Seen here on a TT2 Exige.
