My old Garmin Nuvi 350 has all those features, although you have to purchase the lifetime option the first time you update the maps. Plus, it has a trip computer and it's VERY easy to search for points of interest (gas, food, lodging, etc).
My iPhone has Google maps, but I hate using it as a navigation unit, and you're forced to jump out of nav mode if you want to search for something along the way. |

Don't want to turn this into an iOS vs Android thread. So I won't. I'll just say that they're both very capable. Suffice to say I am probably the biggest Apple fanboy on this forum and...for now...I have an Android smartphone. (Subject to change with the iPhone 5)
Quote:
Back when I had my iPhone there was no free turn-by-turn voice navigation app. Google gives you one on Android. Also - if you get an Android phone on Sprint - Sprint gives you one, too. They're both good but I prefer the Google one because it is seamlessly integrated with the Maps app and seems to acquire the directions much faster than the Sprint nav app. |

On Android OS, you can have Google Maps, Copilot (has spoken street names), MobileNavigator, iGoMyWay (all three has free life-time map updates), and some others. As far as I can tell, there aren't any GPS devices that gives free life-time traffic conditions. What you should look for is a GPS that can quickly get a signal lock and with a good battery life. |

I guess it's personal preference, but if I'm using a nav unit on a road trip, I prefer to keep the phone out of the loop. It's nice to have the GPS stuck to the window where I can scroll through trip data, find gas, and see how optimistic my speedo is.

I have a window mount for my phone which places it exactly where any GPS would be. My personal preference is to not talk on the phone or text at all while driving. (My wife hates that I almost never answer her calls while I'm on the road.) So the phone-as-GPS-navigation works perfectly....it's not doing anything else while my attention is where it should be, anyway.

Thanks all for our input. Will have a look at the Garmin line . No need (what?) for Iphone, smart phone or mp3 player. It's just a little hard finding music for my 8 track player

I've got a garmin nuvi wt 265. It doesn't have lifetime map update, but it does have lifetime traffic updates, which is alot more useful to me. Got it for $100 shipped NIB. It also has handsfree calling through bluetooth, but doesn't really work unless tops up, windows closed, and you talk really loud. But its handy for those times I left the jawbone at home.
