Default Problem with installing Hella Supertones 04 MSM

Alright, I have a 2004 MSM and used a wiring diagram from a '99 to figure out the grey/black wire on the front end of the car and the green/orange under the steering column is for the horn.

I tested the green/orange wire to check voltage and all was okay. I bolted the 2 Hella Supertone horns to the front of the car and set them up piggybacked so each one has a ground wire and one's positive is coming from the other one, and ran new horn wiring through the firewall into the relay that was supplied (87). Then I spliced the green/orange wire and fit it onto the relay to supply voltage (30). I set up a horn button on the side of my center console and set one wire running into the radio fuse (20 amps) and the other wire running into the relay (86). Then I set the ground for the relay on the back side of the bolt between the nut and the steering column metal.

Everything looks set up like example 2b in the instructions (for those that have it), and I checked all voltages before setting it up, used guaged wire that would be ample enough to support the new horns, and carefully double checked everything..........but all that would happen when I hit the horn button is a click from the relay.

Can anyone tell me what I have done wrong? Tomorrow I will go check to make sure I plugged everything onto the right numbered prong on the relay, and check voltages again.

Daisy-chain the horns. Use the negative from the first horn and connect it to the positive terminal on the second one.

^^ Don't do that unless you want half-powered horns. Putting the horns in series will double the resistance and effectively reduce the voltage to the horns.

Without a reference to the wiring diagrams you are basing this on, I can't say what you've done wrong, but here is some general horn install info that may prove helpful: Pin 30 should be your +12v supply voltage (from the battery or fuse panel). Pin 87 will go to the positive terminals on your horns. Your horns should be grounded directly to the chassis. Pin 85 should be connected to your +12v horn button switch. Pin 86 should be connected directly to ground.

How do I know what terminal on the horn is positive and negative? It is not marked. That might be the mistake if they are actually meant for one or the other

also. From the horn button, the diagram says there is a wire leading off of it that goes to positive. So I have the wire coming from my relay to the horn button, and a wire leading off the horn button to my 20amp fuse under the dash. Does that sound correct?

Looking at the diagram now.

Pin 86 = Horn button. Then run wire from horn button to another positive
Pin 87 = Horns
Pin 30 = Power from battery or fuse (have the power coming from the green/orange cable connected to the fuse)
Pin 85 = ground

When looking at the back of the horn, terminals at the bottom of the horn--The right "silver" terminal is negative. The left "gold" terminal is positive...

I think both of mine were the same color, but I figured it out today. I had to run a wire from the battery to the relay, and spliced together the 12 volt power feed to the horn switch and put them on terminal 30 and everything worked fine.

Evidently using the orange/green cable in the car is not a good idea because of the stock relay interfering with the new one provided for the horns

Glad to hear you were able to get it sorted out. It still amazes me how wimpy the OEM horn is on a Miata. Before I installed my current setup, I could lay on the horn and the dumb blonde talking on her cell phone while stopped at a green light in the SUV in front of me wouldn't even hear it.
