I would like to upgrade the audio system in my 2003 Miata LS. I just bought it used and it looked like it has an aftermarket cd player that looks similar to what the original was.
Goal: To provide a strong sound system without it sounding ghetto. I just want crystal clear audio that i can blast with the top down. 1) Give ideas for the best replacement audio system(cd player and Aux input are mandatory) 2) Best speakers a. Open to sub but i need to know where to put it, and how to wire it. 3) Best amp (wattage and give me some brands) Show me pics of your setup or suggestions. I would just like to compile in one place a complete DIY guide for upgrading the sound system on a Miata. Pictures, Links, Youtube vids, Wiring diagrams would all be awesome helps. I'll start my research tonight and post what i find!! |

I've got a Alpine CDA 105L headunit Memphis audio component speakers and a 12 inch Memphis sub hooked up to a Phoenix 500 amp. It sounds great

I had Kenwood components before I got my Alpines. Kenwood was far better and I wish they would have had them to replace mine when I needed to replace them due to a broken stud on the back shorting my speaker out. Decent amp to your doors is what most people will recommend. Hope this helps out some. I have an 8" polk audio sub that sounds decent but I took it out because I liked the extra room on the parcel shelf.

Nice. Ok so thanks for the input on the Polk and Kenwood speakers. I'll do some research on your suggestions. I was kinda drifting towards Kenwood just because I know more about them. I found crutchfield.com which is already a huge help although there are still a ton of choices.
I like that Alpine CDA 105L. Definitely along the lines of what i'm looking for. I found this as a good pic. I was wondering how/where to mount subs. : http://www.miata.net/garage/wbspeakers2.html I'll have more time to search this weekend. Thanks for your input so far. |

I actually think the BOSE system in my 02 is decent. I have plenty of other things to spend money on before I even touch the audio. But to each their own of course. I'm definitely interested in what you find. |

Just put an alpine cde123 in my 99. It had the Bose system in it but it sounds awesome with the new HU. Got it from crutch field for 144 shipped.

a good clean sounding sound system has a lot to do with the installation. The doors should be dynomatted and all air gaps sealed. Good wiring and the Amp should have a ground very short ground cable . Make sure the speakers are mounted firmly and do not rattle. As for speakers they all sound different. I really like the sound of MB Quarts and JL Audio XR's with JL Amps. I would listen to different brands and see what sounds good

Headunit is your choice, obviously. Any of the higher end units are good. I run a Kenwood in mine. (Came with the car, like it enough to not swap it out.)
I believe you have 8" speakers in the doors. I have Clearwater components in my car. There aren't a lot of 8" component speaker sets on the market, which could be an issue. As a whole, i like CDT as a brand. You will more than likely need a sub if you want to blast crystal clear audio with the top down. |

Thinking about going with this under my seat. If the 10" doesn't fit i'll just go with the 8".
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...0JR-0003-00006 Seems decent. I was all excited about the audio, but i discovered Flyin miata and now i feel like spending my money on performance. So much to do. |
