Default Stereo stopped working all the time.

Yup, I think it's on it's last leg.

When I get into the car, I have to hit the power button to turn it on, even if I left it on previously. When I go to play a cd, it will play about the first 20 seconds of each track, then go back to the first track. And the radio goes in and out (could be shitty reception).

Any one have a good CHEAP replacement suggestion?

Oh, this could be related too. When I pulled my seats out, I had audio wires going into my seats. However, I do not have headrest speakers. They had those pull apart connections, and I tried to pull them apart but they broke. I don't think this would have any effect however, but I have been wrong before.

I notice now since I've been driving in the dark, the power to the faceplate goes off sometimes, but the red power led stays on. /stumped

Just pull it out and don't look back, not bad after the first drive. Not missing mine a bit

Dude get an aftermarket deck and harness for <$60 and call it a day. It sounds like a loose connection but theres no way to tell whats wrong without pulling the deck and inspecting the wiring, ect.

Thing is I just moved and am still looking for a job. I might have to just deal with it until I get some funds coming in. It's an old old old Jensen head unit, looks like from the late 1990's lol.

Buy this

http://www.ebay.com/itm/500W-High-Ca...item3f10388629

and this
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1989-2000-Ma...ffac57&vxp=mtr

All you need then is a RCA>3.5mm plug cable and you have a working stereo that only takes aux-in. $16. Obviously it's not really a 500w amp, but it's been working for me for the past two or three years.

So ipod, phone or laptop hmmmm. I think that might work out well. Thanks for the idea!

So now my gauge cluster goes lights off sometimes. And since I have my extra gauges running off the power to those, they go off too. I checked the fuse box under the dash, and nothing was blown. Then I go to try turning it on again and they work. So I think something to do with the fuse box is going wonky on me, just don't know what. Any ideas?

Does the faceplate just lose power and you still have audio playing or does the radio turn completely off?

Sooooooooo, before we go through the expense of buying a NEW Aftermerket unit, have we figured out where the problem, at hand, lies?

Get your multimeter, and test the TWO 12v leads to your head unit.

One is CONSTANT 12v....meaning it's 12v, no matter where your key is, and the other is SWITCHED 12v, so only with the key turned...

Make sure you're getting proper power to that deck, BEFORE you rule it out.

Chances are the constant(yellow off the deck) wire is ok if the red LED is staying on all the time. Could be an issue with the switched/ignition(red) wire if he is losing audio when the display goes out, but that doesn't explain what's happening with his gauges. If he is noticing it at night, could be an issue with the circuit the parking light/dimmer is on.

*EDIT*
Whinin, when you mention the radio goes out, do you mean radio reception or power? If you play a cd and you lose power and it turns on, it will start playing from the beginning again vs where it was left off if you changed sources, Mylesofsmyles hit it on the head where you may be having an issue with contstant power to your deck. To his point, when you lose power to your deck, do you lose radio preset settings/stations?

Yea, sometimes I will come back out to my car and my radio stations are all gone, and set back to 87.5 instead of 93.5 I had it set on. After hearing all this I do believe the switched power source is failing, and that would link my gauge cluster acting up to. I did switch a ground in the engine bay, since I have a randall intake and there was water pooling on a ground, I moved it to a higher point.

The faceplate and audio turn off but I still have the red light on.

And I have the power to my aftermarket gauges running off the dimmer. So they only turn on when I have my parking lights running.

I'm not sure what grounds go to the one I moved. If you're looking at your engine bay, it's the ground under the master cylinder.

Always start at what changed before the problem showed up.

What changed is you altered the wiring at the seat speakers, by breaking a connector and leaving it that way.

If the output to those speakers is shorted (permanently or intermittently) that can cause the deck to go into protect mode (if you're lucky; an emission of smoke and permanent damage if you're not).

I'm not sure how the headrest speakers are configured in the OEM system, but it's possible that they are connected to the main (door) speakers in such a way that the short does not result in destruction of the output stages, because there is just enough residual resistance to keep that from happening.

However, it will cause the deck to go into protect mode (if it has such a mode; most OEM decks do, however, because the manufacturer anticipates a clash between the electrically clueless and wire snippers sometime after the car leaves the factory).

Protect mode has the equivalent effect of turning main power off and on, resulting in the exact symptoms you're experiencing.

The fact that the main power LED remains on supports this, since it's the deck itself and not the delivery of 12V that is doing the turning off and on if indeed a protect mode is in operation.

You need to properly dress those wires that go to the headrest speakers so they cannot short. Even if this is not the source of the problem, it has to be done otherwise any new install will instantly cost you money if there is any issue there. Your description of what happened with the seat install does not give me confidence there can't be a problem there. So, make sure there isn't an issue before you go any further, and if there is, fix it.

Then carry on to other power wiring issues if it doesn't solve the problem.

If it were me, I'd go next to proper ground and confirm that, then to power to deck (constant and switched) and confirm that. All the time looking for evidence of heat, since anytime you have power or output issues you can melt stuff like wiring or connectors.

With the problems you're experiencing I would not attempt any repairs or examinations without first removing the negative battery cable at the battery.

DO NOT use a test lamp on any computer-controlled vehicle. You can buy a Digital Multimeter (DMM) for peanuts these days ... $10 if you're cheap and look in the right places, $25 if you buy the first one you see wherever ... and the cheap ones are fine for automotive troubleshooting. The cheapest ones are quite accurate for your purposes, and even if you eventually become an electronics wizard, you will want more than one anyway and will still find it useful.

So the bundle of wires underneath the dash just above the clutch pedal, the connector wasn't plugged in all the way. The stereo works properly now! Simple as that. Thanks for all the help though guys, much appreciated.
