Default Timing belt replaced....now crappy accelleration?!

Yesterday, I had a mechanic friend of mine replace a broken timing belt, that snapped in two places on Sat. evening.

Everything seemed o.k., with the exception of the waterpump which was shot... the crank was fine, and all the seals were fine. After replacing the tensioners, waterpump, and timing belt...everything started up just fine. But when it came time to drive my miata home, it took forever to pick up speed. Starting out in first gear, it felt as though you were starting out in third!! On top of that, I started to get the sound of a crushed muffler!! I checked the timing, which was fine. My guess is that the moron had the positions of the cam wheels off.

Do you think this is my problem?

Any useful feedback would be great.

Thanks.

Sounds like the new belt was put on a tooth (or two) off. I'd check the cam gear angles to ensure they're right.

Or the crank might be 360 degrees off from pistons 1+3 being TDC.
