Default Kind of Important Question

I was taking out my a/c today and I was going to take the bracket off that holds it to the engine (I even bought a new 50mm 8x1.25 to put in its place), then decided that I'd just leave it on since it was the last thing to take off and I already wrestled the compressor out. Well screwing back on the bolt that goes into the front of the engine the damn thing snaps at the threads. WTF Fail.

How important is this bolt?

Thanks guys.

I have a feeling it kinda is necessary. Do you think I can still drive the car till I get it drilled out, tapped and replaced?

Important. it looks like the bolt that goes through the front of the A/C bracket into the oil pump. you will leak with out it.

haha i ended up with the same thingafter i did my water pump. I had it all put together and looked down and found that same bolt laying there. I stuck it back in a hole that looked good and itfit so luckily it looks like its in the right place.

Okay, well if you have been running for a month with no problems, that gives me a little bit of time to get the damn thing extracted and a new one in.

No oil is leaking from what I can tell, now all I need is one of those little 90 degree drills as its one hell of a tight fit.

Yep, that stupid bolt hole did LEAK OIL - not good. My son just put the bolt back in moments ago.

I think you put the wrong length bolt back into the block - the shorter bolt goes into the engine - that 50mm bolt held the compressor to the bracket. You may have snapped it off because you bottomed it out(?). But I think you can just leave it in there...

i think your right. i just walk out and looked at my 99 1.8l motor. The bolt is not there but you can see that its not a deep. Max of like 2". Tomorrow I will try and tread a bolt into the whole and give an idea of the length

yeah the four bolts that hold the compresor to the bracket and the one that goes into the front of the engine all look exactly the same, except the one that goes into the front is like 10mm shorter.

You could see my confusion while laying on my back in the hot florida sun.

It snapped clean at the treads, I am going to take the bracket off either today or tomorrow and see if the threads sits flush or is sunken in a bit, then think of my plan of attack to getting it out.

I am not sure why you would need to pull it out? If enough of the bolt is in there to keep it from leaking then you should be good?
Well, maybe that bolt is supposed to hold the pump together? If that is the case perhaps you should extract/replace it because it will not be doing it's job without a head on it.

I would monitor it for leaks. That bolt was loose on my car, and I got an oil leak. A friend of mine removed it with his A/C delete, and his car shot oil like a spigot.
Though one of the guys I work with removed it on both his cars and doesn't have a leak on either.
Point being, if it doesn't leak, I wouldn't go through the trouble of extracting it.

No, I am going to go through the trouble of extracting it. I didnt pull the a/c out half assed so I am not going to leave a half asses stud broken in the block.

Cool, that's probably the right way to go. Good luck with the extraction, Doctor.

I wouldnt say that, but I try my best....which usually results in some kinda fuck up, like this bolt in question. If I was still up in michigan I'd be down to help out.

well the odd part is i took mine out last summer and the only thing that leaks on mine is the front of the oil pan gasket below the crank. one bolt had a little oil on it when removed but has never leaked since.

I am pretty sure that that bolt has to be like 45mm to work properly. 50mm will bottom out, and 40mm will not go in far enough. It does go into the oil pump on the engine.

OK, my son confesses that the bolt still sticks out about 10mm. He seated it tight, but was careful not to break it off .

I think I am going to have him put a stack of washers on it (?)

there should be five bolts that look the same, four that hold the compressor to the bracket (the long ones) and one that goes into the front of the engine...this is the shorter one, looks to be around 10mm shorter.

maybe I'll take some pics of the bolts tomorrow
