Default Went to a dyno day, does this seem about right for whp?

The car is a 1995 Miata, RB intake and header, 2.5" exhaust, and an exhintake. The engine only has 66k miles on it, and it doesn't appear to have any problems, does 116.8 whp seem low or about right? I thought it would be higher.

Quick video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iW8dftq6wVo

My dyno plot, doesn't really show much.

Is there anything I should check to see if my engine is okay? How can I get some more horsepower out of this thing?

Thats pretty strong actually. Most 1.8 NA miatas with intake/exhaust are 110-117 hp on a dynojet.

Well I'm glad to hear that it doesn't seem unusually low. What do you think would give me the most bang for buck for the next engine upgrade? A high flow cat/test pipe or what?

How restrictive is the stock cat? The RB header has a pretty large down tube and the exhaust is a full 2.5" ID, so the cat is the only part of the exhaust I haven't touched.

Ditch the power steering and AC and get the thing at the bottom of this page: http://www.fuji-racing.com/fujiracing_095.htm

Your car will be a little bit faster, the engine will feel more responsive and you'll ditch some weight (which positively effects every aspect of performance). Best bang for your buck by far, especially if you sell off all your power steering and AC stuff.

I made 110whp with obx header/stock cat/2.5in catback/foam panel filter in stock airbox at about 100k miles.

I would have expected a couple more with your exintake/racing beat and low miles.

I think most of the stock NA8s make around 102-107whp

That depends on what you're looking for in terms of "bang." If you want more horsepower and torque then nothing beats forced induction. A high-flow cat may be good for the environment if your current catalytic converter is bad but on a naturally aspirated motor you won't see any improvements. Some people like nitrous oxide but you can easily spend just as much on a nice N2O injection kit as you would on a DIY turbo. Personally, I like individual throttle bodies but they are an acquired taste.

Best bang for the buck? considering the mods you already have done, I'd go for a MSPNP. I gained 7.5 peak hp and as much as 15 ft/lb of tq in the lower RPMs, and then another 5hp across the board after I ditched the maf. This was after a couple hours on the dyno of course... I have a built engine but you would probably see similar gains.

I dont know what else besides nitrous would give you more power for your money at this stage, and if you plan to go turbo/SC/ITB later it would be to your benifit, you would not close any doors for future mods. a high flow cat or test pipe would probably net a couple hp.

Squirt it! (my next investment)

btw on test pipe, don't get a cheap one (made that mistake) - get the FM or... there are nice ones on ebay now that are resonated. Cheap test pipes sound tinny.

What kind of dyno is that? Mustang?

That's a useless plot. WTF? Somethin's up with either your car or my car, 'cause you and i had the exact same mods excluding exhaust.

Megasquirt PNP, by far the best Next Step bang for the buck. You get to roll from naturally aspirated to any level of forced induction you want to and be able to tune that car like a pro!

I'm not sure what kind of dyno it is, I don't know the differences.

I think it said Dyno Dynamics or something like that, it was an AWD dyno. Does that help?

What do you think could be wrong with my car? I think I'm going to do a compression and leak down test this weekend just to check. Maybe I'll change my fuel filter too, since I'm pretty sure that's original.

*edit*

This is the dyno they had: http://www.dyno.com.au/dyno/controll...owAWD450DSPage

um, nothing wrong with your car at all. Different cars make different HP, even if they're one vin # off from eachother. It's just how it is.

Your car makes good power, the scale on the dyno is just way too big for the power output, lazy dyno operator!

Miata's don't really respond to NA mods, but be happy with the power you free'd up!

Yeah. but that's a 16hp difference on identical mods to me. Somethings up.

That dyno at PRE is renowned for tossing out completely BS numbers in a lot of circles. remember that wannabegts guy who posted up the "1.6 with an intake cam on the exhaust" and made like 115-120 wheel horse? He worked there. that's one reason i didn't go to this dyno day.
