2001 engine in a 1994? thanks for the help. new question

Hi all, like the topic says is it possible to put a 2001 engine in a 1994 body, would it be a simple install for a mechanic or would there be more to it like electronics and such... and would it be worth it. possible costs? would I need any other things to convert to 1994 with 2001 engine.
Either going with a used 1994 engine with 80k or a brand new crate engine.

i know the 99-00 will work but with the 01 i dont think it would work unless you work out the how to control the vvt or just use the 01 wiring harness and ecu. i am sure someone here has a better answer

If you swapped in the ECU and harness, I don't see why it wouldn't. The electronics are really the only major hurdle I'd think you have (besides the fact that Mazda went to a returnless fuel system in '99).

Stick with the 99-00 motor, the electronics is much easier and no VVTi or whatever Mazda calls it.

I've installed many 1.8l's into 1.6l ('90-92) cars.
The simplest is the '94-'97 engines.
The '99-'00 engines are a bit harder but nothing too complex.
The 2001+ engines are a PITA!
I did a 2001 swap into a 1990 once and I would not recommend it again.
Also the power delivery is simply not really worth the extra hassle.
The '99-'00 engines displace a good amount of power with smooth driveability.

If you really want to, you can always get the pistons/rods/etc. for a 2001 motor and install them. They have a 10 to 1 CR.

Thanks for all the great reply's, seems that the 2001 might be too much trouble. If I need to depending on what the mechanic says I might have to either rebuild my engine,

(last time I drove it ... going to the happiest place on earth (d-land) it was smoking alot of white smoke... no overheat or fluctuation in oil pressure that I noticed.... kinda stuttery but never died... kinda funny though because the car behind me had to slow down alot in the parking structure because it was like a giant smoke screen in the d-land parking structure... decided to park go to d-land and enjoy the day and tow it home later that night.)

If anyone might off hand have any ideas of problems... tow truck guy was saying it might be a head gasket... my mechanic says there's oil in the 4th cylinder but not a miata specialist so he needs to do further investigation and about 3 months ago I did new hoses water pump and oilchange and timing belt. All stock parts.

Is it better to rebuild my 90k engine (automatic) or purchase a 80k same year engine 1994 for $750. He would install for $500. Reason I brought up the 2001 wasnt for more hp but I saw one online still in the crate brand new for 1800.

Not sure which way to go with it. need help... Gonna take it to Salazar Mazda tomorrow to have him look at it ... supposedly a mazda specialist. in Los Angeles. anyone with a better mechanic they would send it to would be great.

There goes my suspension money dang it... missed the tech day in LA also cause of this lol

Ok, so my '91 1.6 has two fuels lines, I assume a feed and a return. The '99 1.8 going in seems to have only one line. Do I just cap the return?

I'm doing the same swap, and I bought a fuel rail from a 94-97 engine. I don't think you can just cap the return fuel line?? Maybe I'm wrong but it makes more sense to me...

Check with Garage Hundred One; they've been doing a remarkably neat conversion on several cars. Maybe they have a kit or guide.

Yup, do like Serge did and obtain a fuel rail from a '94-'97 return style 1.8l.
The fuel line on the car with a white marking is the return.

Check them out they did a +01 motor swap into a NA, w/ IRTB's looks like a very nice car. However also running a Freedom ECU.

The +01 motor is hard enough to work on in a 2001! But I will say I love the motor and the higher compression.
