Default NA6 high rpm squeal

Hey guys,

I've had my 1993 NA6 for almost 3 weeks now and i love it, but i'm having a certain mechanical problem (among others, but one at a time) that's making it far less fun than it could/should be.

Above 5000-5300rpm, the motor makes a high pitched squeal kind of noise. At least, i'm assuming it's the motor, as happens regardless of gear/conditions, it's just above that rpm. I have no idea what it could be, but i want to get it sorted fairly soon if it's not prohibitively expensive, as i'm currently missing out on a whole 2000rpm of fun, which sucks when the power doesn't really come on til after 4000rpm.

So yeah, any opinions on what might be causing this would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Kieren

I think ive come across the same thing in my NB... the sound seems to come from the tranny area. I took off the boot, & noise canceling foam .the upper and lower boots were ripped, which is where i thought the sound was coming. Replaced them, a little less hissing squeeling sound, but still remained. So i hope some one can tell us what that sound is because its annoying as FARK. goodluck

From what you describe, sounds similar to my plugged cat problem a few months back. The squeal was air whistling out the O2 sensor threads.

Mine eventually progressed to all RPMs like so:

Unscrew your o2 sensor and if it runs without the squeal, that's your problem.

Oh gawd that would have given me a heart attack trying to disgnose that noise!

That one is definitely strange...and I will file that away in the 'strange but true' section of weird problems that are impossible to diagnose...but one that happened to someone else and THEY diagnosed it...

Thanks Haigog, i'll give it a go. Is it ok to take the car for a short drive and rev high (to redline) with the O2 sensor unscrewed, to check if the noise is still there? Or will no O2 sensor screw something up?

It will be fine. The ECU goes into closed loop and ignores signals from the o2 sensor at high RPM's anyway.
