Default cant shift into 5th after changing tranny oil

I have a 2004 MSM 6th speed manual, and I just changed my transmission oil and now it doesn't shift into 5th, whether it is cold or running.

I didn't take off the bolt on the passenger side.

Also a couple of days ago I was driving to work and it wouldn't shift into 6th, I had to downshift to 2nd for it to open up 6th.

Ill probably take apart the shift mechanism in a couple of days...

Man I just got the car too lol.

Anywho, any help would be cool.

Take your centre console off an have a look at the shift boots. Sometimes if they are torn / broken they can restrict the shift lever motion.

This is a shot in the dark, but would putting too little or too much oil cause this? Or possibly the wrong viscosity?

You can also try changing your turret oil and check all of your bushings on your shifter. Your car isn't that old, but hey. Anything can happen.

I put mobile 1, 75w90. And initially I thought i didn't put enough in, so I opened the fill hole again and a lot of oil flowed out. I guess I put too much???? I let the excess flow out of the fill hole and then tested 5th gear, and it was a no go.

And just to make sure I re-pumped another 1/2 qt of oil into the tranny and let the excess flow out again.

I'll probably take the shift boot apart and then probably put that ford tranny oil in and see that happens lol!

thanks guys

It's not a problem related to fluid. Maybe the shift boots are shot causing it to restrict movement, like has already been suggested. You don't need to cram all 2 quarts into it. Make sure the car is level, and fill it until it flows out of the fill plug, that's all it takes, it's full. Is it "not going into gear" a mechanical feeling, like something inside the trans isn't allowing it? Or is it more of an issue where the shifter just doesn't want to go?

Did you ever take off the shift boots? Something may have fallen into your turret while they were off causing a block on that particular gear. When you go and refill the turret take a flashlight and scope mirror to make sure there isnt anything down there that wasnt meant to be.

I took apart the shift boot, and everything looked fine, the bushings looked good and i re-tightened everything and greased everything.

It feels like something inside the transmission is blocking the path to the 5th gear. Its soo weird, would it be a problem with the clutch?

The 6 speeds don't have oil in the turret.

Does anyone know a good miata guru around the riverside county area? Or actually any good miata places?

No turret oil in a 6 speed, you can actually fill a 6sp from there.

this happens to me in my subie every once in a while, but I just have to put it back in neutral, wiggle around, then it will pop back in. Weird that it happens after you change your oil. But I think that is likely coincidence. Keep us updated.

Yeah I'm probably gonna take it in on my next day off. Car drives smooth but it's just that 5 gear.

Any good places for transmission work? Some people recommend orange of Mazda, was wondering id there are any other good places near riverside county.
