Ever since I bought my car I noticed a clinging sound coming from the engine. I had a friend diagnose it and tell me it was the lifters being stuck and old. I decided to take apart my engine and clean each lifter. The lifter cleaning worked with a few DIY's I found online:
http://www.miata.net/garage/hla/cleaning.html http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=208366 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RX3vnnq4y7M Each lifter I cleaned had disgusting black grimy oil in it and I cleaned eight of the sixteen. What I had a problem with is dealing with the Camshaft and putting that and the timing belt back on the right way. I shouldnt of done it but I guessed where it was (The Cams) before I put it all back together. Because once I put it all back together and started the car it would not start. It sounded as if it wanted to but it didnt. I'm thinking I should take it all apart again (keep it in neutral) and place the cam shafts and the gears with the lettering matching the engine as this guy did when he put it back together: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHRfW...feature=relmfu Yes the lifters all work as if they were brand new after I cleaned them all and placed them back into their original holes/position. |

After I put the timing belt gears into place with the cam shafts and attempted to start it. Will it damage the engine in any way? or will just placing the lettering 'I' and 'E' on the gears with the engine work while in neutral? should I put it in any gear before matching them up?

Get someone to retime it that knows that they are doing. Your doing something wrong. Being in gear or neutral really has nothing to do with anything. I think it's fairly clear you are way over your head man.
Did everything line up exactly like those pictures? Do you have the correct plug wire feeding the right cylinder? You could have rotated the CAS 180 degrees when you were removing the cams. Sounds to me you have fucked with it so much now you are going to have to find TDC manually. Find the top of cylinder ones stroke by putting a screw driver in the spark plug hole. Then use the pulley markings to measure it precisely. Who knows where in the cycle you have this thing lol. |

Your in redlands, see if any of the local miata peeps can help spin a wrench. It shouldn't take someone who's done it before much time at all.

She's aliveee!! I'd like to personally thank 91Radio Flyer, djdeluxept, WildCJ5, emtran, Conundrum, Braineack, 1vicissitude and I'd also like to thank PhillyB..
The problem was that the crankshaft needed to be in T.D.C., which meant I had to take out fuses and measure and some other stuff! |

Soo.. I'm having this exact same problem and am working with no space at all.. Any advice on how to get the lock off?
http://forum.miata.net/vb/showthread.php?t=394887 There is one long bolt that is there & really really hard to get to.. it's a 12mm, should I buy a skinny 12 point socket wrench with a bend on the end and put it through? This is honestly being a huge pain.. EDIT: Did what I said I would.. Cam is off.. I win you piece of shit bolt... Haha |
