Just a random thought,Has any one tried a 6 speed gearbox from a NB on a early 1600 5 speed car?
I,ve looked at them at work and reckon they are a damn near straight conversion with minor bits like Clutch and Flywheel etc needing doing,But they are the same length overall.
I have sold NB 1600cc boxes to go onto NA Turbo's and have been told they feel real good and no issues changing them over.
Anybody tried and found any pitfalls?,or is it as easy as it looks?
it works. its been done many times you dont have to change the clutch and flywheel. i think you end up only using 2 or the 3 bolts for the starter. you have to change sensors over. the shifter is different as well. maybe someone who has done the swap can chime in on this.
It's easy. You'll have to get/swap the correct speed sensor as well. You'll probably want to get a later starter as well since it's a significant weight savings.
If I am not mistaken a 6 speed combined with the ring gear in a 1.6L is going to be the same final gear as a five speed with the ring gear in a 1.6L The cars came with different ring gears as the diff changed and the gears in the transmission were selected around that ring gear, so I would check that out cause you could lose top speed if the gearing gets too out of whack.
A few guys in england did this with the standard 1.6 4.3 diff. I think that the general consensus was that it would be awesome on track..but at 70 in top, the revs were sitting a couple hundred rpm higher then the 5 spd! So a "bit busy" for a DD.
Hahahaha Bonneville car much. What about that hartley V8 doesnt it wind out to something stupid like that or even a rotary engine would be able to crank out the revs but will it have enough power to move the car!
A 6 speed with some 3.23 gears would be nice for the highway, I really hate cruising at 120km/h in fifth doing 4K revs (probably not accurate but you 5speed guys know what I am talking about)
Someday, I'd like to put a 3.636 rear end with a 6 speed into my Miata. Basically it'd be like having a regular 5 speed, only with a really nice 6-gear overdrive for freeway cruising at ~3000rpm.
i have the 6speep with 3.6 gears and doesn't feel that great. that's why i am going to try an aftermarket rear end with 3.23 gears to get more top end speed.
5th gear in a 5 speed is longer than 6th in a 6 speed.... if highway comfort is a huge concern keep the 5 speed, change the rear end gear. however, i do see how the 6 speed will help you keep some of the acceleration while lengthening the final gear.
