I have a NA - and it seems that the distance between my steering wheel and the light and wiper stalk changes with different wheels and different load will move my steering column either closer with the stalk
I guess it does move left and right because sometime one side is closer then the other - and since I have an aftermarket steering wheel that puts my knuckles right where the stalks are it has become really obvious
Check the 4 bolts connecting the rack to the subframe. (4 bolts like the 2 vertical ones pictured here. There are 2 others on the other side.) If they are loose they will allow the rack to move around what will push the steering column places. So tighten them back up. Then (assuming you have the car jacked up on the front) wiggle the front wheels around again and check for any weird movements, AKA if one wheel turns but the other doesn't, one turns more then the other, etc... That could indicate a bad rack. Have you had any problems aligning the car?
Another theory: The spline that connects the steering column to your aftermarket wheel hub broke off or sheared. Sometimes they are welded in places and then a bolt is fed through, so maybe that bolt broke off.

also check the U joint that connects the steering shaft to the spline shaft on the rack.
The U joint is under the rubber boot just above the Steering rack housing itself.
If your steering wheel / Hub is AM put your eyeballs on it
