so im new to NA engines and would like a little guidance on what to do i have a 1.6 motor and am planning on going all motor i was going to do wiseco 11:1 comp heads and kelford cams is there anything else i can/should do? and what upgrades provide the most bang for the buck? thanks for the help
i was thinking of turbo or sr20 swap but i dont have that much money for a swap and a turbo isnt want i want yet. i would just like to stay with the stock miata block and push around 140-160 on just motor
but you wont get much from cams and high comp heads, maybe with ITBs but im not too sure.
easiest and CHEAPEST way would be FI. or NOS. or an ENGINE SWAP (the 1.8)
really? ive been reading around on here and miataturbo and ive read some people saying that early 1.6 had bad rods and the years after 1991 were made stronger. sorry to be a noob but can some one educate me
I've never heard anything about rods in 1.6s. All miata motors until about 2005 fall under a very general rule of thumb that they're not gonna have too many problems with ~12psi if its done correctly.
Your car however, depending on the year of your car (90 and early 91s) may have a problem known as a short nose crank. Some people never have a problem with it, but the crank has a shorter keyed area that holds on the timing sprocket and crank pulley. It can just break right the **** off one day and then your engine is pretty much a **** salad. I wouldn't recommend boosting one of those.
If I was you I'd just buy a busted 1.8 and rebuild it on the side until you blow up that 1.6. The 1.8 drops right in. You have to make a couple of simple wiring mods. You'll only **** it up if you're a scrub
go with high comp and buy my hayabusa itbs.
you will need better valve springs for bigger cam. built head with bigger valves and etc and maybe go with better rod if your saying that they are crap.
1.6 motor is more reliable than 1.8's
actually no...I'm trying to buy a supercharger soon, so that would mean more potential buyers competing against me...headwork and cams all the way bro!

If you are planning on sticking to naturally aspirated and if installing the 1.8L is legal where you are, then I would suggest like nev above to buy the 1.8L first and rebuild it while you thrash the 1.6L till it breaks
For your reference, my built 1.6L is pushing 130whp with the following done:
1. FM 11:1 pistons, OEM conrods
2. HKS cams on OEM cam gears
3. Removal of AFM
4. Standalone ECU (most important I believe)
5. MLS head gasket
6. ACL bearings
No port and polish, valve job, knife-edging or blueprinting as my budget was already blown
If you build the 1.8L fully, then you may hit 150whp. I suggest you go to miata.net and search for postings by Popstoy to see how much he spent to get his engine fully re-built by Rebello Racing to hit 169whp and pass emissions.
thank you guys for all the help i really appriciate it ill check out popstoy's posts but im sure im gonna end up buying a cheap 1.8 and rebuilding it once i get a little more cash that way im not stuck without a car for a few weeks while rebuilding since its my DD
all that work for 150whp lol? boost the 1.6... itll be good for mid 200 hp. i suggest the 2554 for uber fast response. u can make 150hp with NO EFFORT.
1) check out the budget BEGI ch.urbo setups to save $$$
2) get the FM stage 1 clutch
3) MEGASQUIRT!!!!!
4) 1.8l diff
not in this order, but you get the idea... dont waste your time with an n/a miata.....
already have the fm stage 1 just installed, and was gonna get megasquirt either way im going back and forth because turbos are cheaper but all motor has longevity i was thinking about a 2554 begi s and was planning on an ebay intercooler i just need more turbo info because ive done alot of reading on both NA and FI but dont know which route to go
LONGEVITY?!?!?!?!? dude, i literally put my face in my palm with that response of yours lol.
miata engines fair well while boosted... REALLY WELL. most guys on mt.net have thousands of miles without issues, including me.... 235whp on the stock radiator lol. for a really reliable setup invest in a garrett gt2554r... but mt.net guys have awesome luck with the china turbos. the rods in the motor dont do so hot after 250whp but youll have a ton of fun with much less power. i talked to the FM guys and their stock motors last for years with mild track use.
wow i guess i still have alot to learn the forums are teaching me the most which is probably very annoying for all you guys haha but ill do a begi s and ebay intercooler do you suggest cams on that list of parts a few posts back or just stay stock? thank you for the help
im looking at pushing around 200hp to about 250hp, i want to squeeze the most power out of my engine that i can safely. are theyre any begi starter setups that i can use for now and then easily upgrade to about that much power?
i think a lot of people get the china turbo set up and use an intercooler / megasquirt first at like 8psi... then upgrade injectors and turbo later with a bb garrett and like 550cc inj... in my experience just do it right the first time especially with a DD car. my car is also DD. go megasquirt while u r stock first then install inj and street tune.... then when all seems A OK install the turbo and tune for boost....
so your saying to get a megasquirt and learn to tune and then install injectors then get a turbo kit im only looking to push about 8psi at first so thats right up my alley
yeah get used to tuning at first and it also helps reducing the amount of variables when/if there is a problem at first startup; so go step by step... street tune on stock inj, then change inj and change req fuel and retune slighty... when u r happy and have a weekend install the turbo and tune for boost slowly... obviously run best fuel available the tank before you install megasquirt... CHANGE YOUR FUEL FILTER!!!!!!!!!!!
if you are nervous get a dyno tune for boost... worth the money.. mine is rock solid 11.4afr in boost thanks to AMS.
***go on miataturbo.net and READ READ READ the sticky(s)***
most help ive gotten so far thank you im going to definitely get a megasquirt in the near future and learn how to tune will it increse hp or decrease hp if done incorrectly? and tomm ill go back to mt and read the stickies my days coming to an end
ugh. its fine to ask stupid questions, gives me a chance to put out useful information on the side of the useless **** i usually put up.
in short, the original miata engine is an iron block that has boosting history, its been boosted before, and im SUPER DUPER HUNG OVER RIGHT NOW SO EXCUSE IF I SAY ANYTHING WRONG, but the miata was supposed to come boosted at one point from the factory (not just the MSM) but miatas can take a beating with some boost, generally safe under 12 psi is the average concensus (SC,TC) turbo is a nice option, and all motor is A LOT OF MONEY for garbage HP, although you do get responsivness, which you kinda dont need unless you track constantly.
anywaay, im gonna drink a **** ton of water, im fucking wrecked.
