I was off line for over a month ( new house and just got internet back) and am finally able to figure out whats up with my car. Its been parked for over a month, It will start then stall after about 5-10 seconds. I changed the fuel filter and its the same, start, run, run, run, stall. It seems that its pressuring the fuel rail, Would it start at all if it was the pump? Any help would.....help!

Idle is where it's supposed to be right? No vacuum leaks that would cause problems?

It would seem that you're getting fuel to the injectors ... Is it possible for a fuel pump to "start going out" by losing pressure?

It could be spark ... but that should knock really bad because of the misfiring. Hmmmm.

Could it be something wrong with the gas itself?

in the fuel system, what does the fuel relay and regulator do? Since the car starts then dies wouldn't that mean the pumps charging the rail? Also, is it hard to yank out the soft top?

it would be helpful to know what year you have.

the regulator maintains correct fuel pressure to the injectors depending on demand through a vacuum controlled, sprung diaphragm. think of it like this: ever put your thumb over the end of a garden hose to water something? think of your thumb as the fuel regulator. the flow remains constant from the pump, but the regulator increases or decreases the pressure to the injectors. the injectors are an on/off mechanism. the amount of time they are on or off can vary, but they need a certain amount of pressure to get the needed amount of fuel as required by the ECU at that moment. this is a generalized explanation.

the fuel relay is an electrical relay for the fuel system. they will sometimes fail

to answer your question about the top, i think you are doing that to access the fuel pump? here's what i did. put the top up, but don't latch it. leave both doors open. remove the driver's seat. remove the rear parcel carpet, remove the fuel pump access cover, remove the fuel pump assembly. HAVE A FIRE EXTINGUISHER HANDY also leave room on the sides of the car for a quick exit. these are just safety precautions. it also helps to run the tank as empty as you can.

the fuel pump assembly is sort of awkward and a little delicate, so be easy with it. the screws that hold the pump to the assembly at the bottom are a little soft, use a small pair of vise grip AND the right sized screw driver at the same time to loosen them. the rubber band that supports teh fuel pump on the assembly is usually not that elastic anymore, due to age and time spent soaking in fuel. you can use zipties to replace this if necessary without issue.

there are a few issues that might be occurring with your car. how long does it run before it stalls? is is it the same length each time? does teh car start and idle normally? does it help to give it some throttle while it's running? have you recently worked on or replaced the fuel lines going to the fuel rail?

1994 NA

I replaced the fuel filter so far, only. It starts right up (like normal) every time I try, runs for about 5-8 seconds then stalls. If I give it gas it revs up then stalls. I will be taking the soft top off (permanently) today once I figure it out.

Thanks for your help KFJ

Well I replaced the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel filter without any change, starts - then stall. Would the car start at all if it was the fuel pump? I don't mind spending the money but what I don't understand is that I thought the car wouldn't start at all if the pump is bad. How about the Pressure Regulator Control? Could that be bad? My car has been down for almost 3 months and I'm getting a little frustrated!

If your car is starting your fuel pump is still working. Sounds like your idle adjustment screw might be closed all the way. Did you mess with it by any chance? Have you messed with your timing? It could be something as simple as your MAF/AFM.

I havent messed with anything before this problem. I was having a Code 52 blinking awhile earlier but don't remember if it still was blinking at the time it broke down. I was driving the car when it broke down and it felt like a fuel pump or clogged filter. I thought it was going to be a simple fix......not.

the saga continues, I installed a new fuel pump today and no change - starts, run a few seconds then stall. I'm gonna try replacing the fuel pump relay to eliminate that from the possibility list.

FAIL! Well, the list grows, now I replaced the fuel filter, pump, regulator and just put in another fuel pump relay. No luck. Starts right up, runs for a few seconds then stalls. Could it be blockage in the fuel line or maybe the ejectors? I don't get it. Anyone have any ideas on what these symptoms could also be besides what I've replaced?

When you took the pump assembly out, did you flip it over and check the plug the pump wiring goes up to? I didnt and it took me 3 fuel pumps changes to find out it was burnt out and causing every pump to run for only a few miles.
