4 weeks ago I flipped my 1991 red bomber - going 50 I lost the ass end having too much fun and squirreled out, the car landed on its SIDE we both flew out - my woman ended up thrashed a bit in the face, I only had a small cut on my head - it's a satanic miracle we're alive - so I figured since we survived, why stop the fun? So... I bought another miata NA 1991 big crank engine 190K a few weeks ago. This is my THIRD NA miata and I am getting a WHIRRING NOISE when I go above 65 mph.
The sound has nothing to do with engine RPMS but rather traveling speed - at 65 and above I get this whirring noise kind of like youd expect to hear from a large semi truck or bus.. whiir whir whir whir whir whirrrrrrrr....
If I drop below 65 you dont hear it. I can rev it to redline all I want, so long as Im below 65mph no whir, above annoying whir -- I cant tell where its coming from as it seems unidirectional.
I own 2 other bombers and none of them do this.
Heres the ONLY hint I can think of - the piece of ass previous owner TOWED it aprox 20K miles - which I suspect he did this on the REAR WHEELS (ie the WRONG WAY) -- Im guessing this becasue the 'baby teeth' on the front are all marred up like it was towed alot.
I've change ALL the oils in the car.. oil was in the tranny and diff, it wasnt bone dry. The car shifts and drives normally, no performance issues, just this goddam filthy noise.
NOTE: the things I checked are
1) tranny and diff oil and 'turret oil' - checked and changed
2) Jacked up the car and 'shook' all 4 wheels to do the 'wheel bearing test' -- all were solid.
SO Im aking you sweet kind gentle miata fans what you think it might be.
THanks
