Rebuild or buy a rebuilt?
I've seen rebuilt heads for $370 shipped to my door.

I'm taking the original head(with cams, lifters, valves, etc still attached) to a local machinist he said he'll inspect for $100 and i'm sure he'll deduct that if i have work done.

But i mean i'm already in the hole with only 270 remaining.

HOWEVER, this machinst REALLY knows his stuff. I mean he is to machining what chip foose is to paint and body.

What should I do?

this is from the rebuilt head ad "This head is completely rebuilt. It has been pressure checked for cracks and resurfaced. Guides and seats have been replaced as needed. New VITON valve stem seals have been installed. All heads are given a three angle valve job. All valves have been vacuum checked to ensure proper sealing."

What would all that typically cost plus a thorough cleaning?

Depends on what part of the country you're in as labor rates vary. But $270 is a cheap ass build and I'd be worried what corners they cut to get the price so low. You're better off taking it to your local machinist even if it costs you more.
that's what i figured. It's a cylinder head rebuildign company so i figure they have all the machining equipment, buy heads, rebuild and sell. So that's probably why they can do it so cheap is because they don't have to pay some other company to machine their stuff.

I took a 1.6 head w/ 80 k miles according to the seller to a local machine shop. Vaccuum testing was $40, to clean and resurface the head was $80, after inspection, they said it needed a valve job and a good cleaning anddddd they wanted $400 for all of that.
$400 total or plus the previous $120?
That doesn't sound to bad to me but i'd like to stay around $250-$350.

I noticed that my valve seats (ON the valves) look almost concave. Is that even possible? Maybe excessive heat played a role!

Has anyone rebuilt their own heads on here? Anyone know of a good place to get tools to do the work on your home shop?

thanks everyone!
