Ok Im stumped... It got to 20*F here one night and the next morning I go out to start my car and the battery dosent seem to have much charge left in it so I jump the car *properly I assure you*
Well after letting it charge a while I try again and it just cranks and cranks with little putts every 6-10 seconds and still no start.
I tried this every day for 5 days and still the same result. Ive changed coils, switched stock computer for my megasquirt, checked all connections, plug wires and fuses and all are good. for those 5 days it never got above 30*F and as low as 16*
I thought maybe the fuel froze so I got it into my garage and warmed it up, it was about 50 in there today when I tried starting it again, with starter fluid and without... no luck... nothing...
The odd part is I'm getting spark and fuel, the plugs arent fouled, and the mass flow sensor is clean...
Any ideas????? This is my daily and only winter vehicle that acctually has traction on snow and ice...
Fuel doesn't freeze till way below zero. I'd check your battery. A lot of times batteries take a **** if their a lil old. You'd be amazed if that's it. Also jumping sometimes doesn't fix it.
If you have a bettery that is super dead, even jumping won't do much good. If someone close by will let you borrow a known good Miata bettery, I'd try that first.
Yeah, I had a battery that I got to turn my car over and running with a jump-start in the cold. However, the battery was so toast that if the idle dipped below a certain rpm, it would just die on me... until the next jump-start Talk about embarrassing. I eventually got home by left-foot braking and keeping the idle above 1500 rpm -- ha!
This happened to me this week. Turns out the battery was extremely dead. Started up like a champ with the new one. Borrow another miata battery and give it a shot.
Mike this also happened to me this morning, as others have said, very dead battery was the cause....guess it's time to suck it up & buy a new westco, the freebie I got from my boss when rebecca got the NA was a 4 year old baker lightweight racing lol
Well Ill give it a try! Ill try just taking out a known good battery from one of our other vehicles first and if thats it then I guess Im screwed till payday... Thanks for all the input!
Replaced battery = fail
Checked coil, ok
checked for fuel, ok
checked all connections and dried them, ok
checked CAS, ok
checked AFM, ok
checked fuses, ok
checked compression, 155 across the board + - 1 psi
do you have your IAC valve on the TB still? I am not running mine and it takes quite a bit of cranking and stalling before it will fire up and idle. Its getting in the 20's at night here in Northern California
Well I warmed the whole engine up to around 50 which its started at before... Im pretty sure its a sensor too but which one? OBD-1 kinda sucks like that... Steve I tested for fuel by a way reccomended to me by Erik. It was a blast, quite litterally lol!
RyanRaduechel Yes I do still have IAC and its hooked up and running properly.
I know it's obvious, but, do you have the proper amount of antifreeze in your cooling system?
Another thing to try is to make sure timing is all lined up?
Remember- having fuel pressure doesn't mean your injectors are actually firing.
You already tried the starter fuild with no luck, and you say your getting spark. Only simple thing I can think of is the MAF, it might be clean but it doesnt mean its working. Trade with some one and check it out.
Guess it depends where you get it...I was told 3 year free replacement & additional 5 year pro-rated(total of 8 years ) from the autozone in moorpark where I got mine from.
If it's not the battery then +1 on the AFM. Swap another one in and give it a shot.
That's the only thing that's ever stopped my car from starting - I pulled the AFM plug too hard and dislodged the bits inside. Same symptoms - endless cranking with no start.
Replaced all the aforementioned parts....
No start but itl sputter and kinda run...
Did have bad gas but completly flushed and replaced with new gas and bled system
no start...
It SPUTTERS!!! it tries to start but doesnt fire often enough to idle or fully start.
