What is the point of removing the intake hose and putting in a breather? I see so many people do this an no one has been able to tell me why. Do you need to plug the hole that used to be the intake hose? :dunno:
Not really.... It's to equalize the crankcase pressure allowing your motor to run better, smoother, with less drag from turbulant pressurized air inside the crankcase resulting from blow-by. On forced induction motors you need a catch-can run to that fitting because the boost will exagrate this blow-by effect and pressurize the oil so much that a little will be pushed out of that opening. On the other side it has a pcv valve (positive crankcase ventalation valve) that vents the gases back into the intake tract. Sorry for spelling.
I had one with itbs, it eventually got soaked with oil and would drip onto my header. Then it finally got totally clogged and the pressure popped it off one day. In other words its a stupid idea
There was recently a discussion that was heavy on the breather system/catch can and having a recirculating or vent to atmosphere with links and information about why it's a good idea to keep vacuum on the breather....but the mods locks it...and now deleted it
Vacuum is good. Sadly, I'm running a breather at the moment with a 323 GTX PCV valve to block boost on the intake manifold side. The port on the exhaust-side of the valve cover for the breather to breathe through is very small, not enough to affect my idle or driving behavior. A real PCV/crankcase vacuum setup is in the works this winter.
