And I need some help. My motor smokes reallllllly bad once I turn it on and after its warm and blow all the smoke out it goes away. I though maybe valve seals but when I read how to replace them I came to find out that others had this problem and they needed new piston rings. I found this set on ebay...

Don't know how good it is so that's where you guys come in :)
I might also buy some new pistons from a reputable place and was looking at 949 but I just cant swing that much money right now. Any other options? I've searched on here and just looking for more insight so I can do this right the first time is all. Thanks!

I don't know about those rings but before buying new rings, pulling the engine, pulling the head, pulling apart the bottom end, honing the cylinder walls, setting end gap, etc., I would compression test it. It may lead to a lot less work.

Not knocking you, just offering friendly advise.

Just wondering were to get good rings and what not at a deal.
You have two ways of getting parts of this category for a cheap price...
1. Replace with oem parts
Or
2. Buy a complete low mileage motor. Its cheaper to take out the complete motor as a whole then it is to tear it down and replace parts

Searching for a used motor is very easy...

car-part.com

I just looked at over 40 listings in the southeast US with mileages ranging from 40k to 180k..and prices from $600-1400...

these were all complete, running 1.8 motors...

go there and refine the search criteria to get something more local to you...it is not hard..took me about 92 seconds..and that included going to your e-bay link to find out what engine size..and that link states 1.8.

And there are other various used part vendors...in the southeast there is partsgroup..ask for Tom...and Mazmart, which I believe is in the Atlanta area...

Rysmiata- idk lol maybe rosenthal Mazda, they tend to have great prices

Dilly- are they really? I've never bought anything from them. I just remember my buddy bought a 3sgte to swap into his celica years ago and the price they gave him was cheaper then everyone else

Mm, yeah. So I've heard from people that bought from them years ago, too. I guess now in this economy, they jacked up their prices. I forgot what my buddy asked for, but all I remember is when he told us a price, my friend and I looked at each other like WTF. Just said thanks and walked out. This was almost a year ago.

Since you're in SC, just call Panic Motorsports and ask them how much a used engine will cost. Heck, even get a lowerish mile shortblock and swap your head on there if you're pretty sure it's not the valve seals...or replace the valve seals when replacing the shortblock. There are a few other places including a couple of people here in Atlanta who might have what you're looking for :dunno:
