Have snaped 9-10 bolts on the head trying to get it to torch spec, cranksaft is massivly leaking and my thermostate is held on with instant gasket:cry2:. All of this was to do a timing belt, So where do I go from here? Swap? Or local Mechanic?

Thanks
Guys:fp::fp:

Are you talking about the VALVE COVER BOLTS AND VALVE COVER GASKET?..the cylinder head does not have to be removed to do a timing belt..

The valve cover bolts get torqued to 48 INCH LBS...not 60 FTlbs...no wonder you broke them...

If you are lucky, you might be able to remove the remainder of the bolts with a pair of pliers...after removing the valve cover again...there might be just enough sticking out to get a grip on...they will not be tight because there is no tension with the heads broken off..

Several used part vendors sell sets of valve cover bolts..chrome and dull...pretty cheap...Planet Miata..partsgroup..BTDTRacing..flying Miata...

I'm thinking has to be valve cover. would not be fun if head studs snapped at 60lbs.

Looks like Big Horn needs Big time Help...

Never undertake a job when you have no clue as to what you are doing...do the research..and have help standing by...like a local Miata club..

doing a timing belt job is not rocket science...a good repair manual..properly read ahead of time is a wonderful thing..

both of my kids are doing them by themselves now...

Hey bighorn you should be able to get the broke valve cover bolts off by pulling the valve cover back off and screwing them out the bottom at least I did on mine (1.6). As for the speedi sleeve I just googled it and came up with this. I hope it helps you. http://www.promshop.info/cataloguespdf/5149e.pdf

Before you go worrying about a sleeve etc. have you actually looked to see if you scratched the crank? A small scratch shouldn't leak, it would be a pretty major gouging. Make sure you didn't poke a hole in the seal. Make sure it's actually seated properly. As for your valve cover bolts, do your best to remove them without using a drill. They shouldn't be that tough to remove. Vice grip the bolt and turn it out of there.

The speedy sleeves are for repairing shafts that are well worn...like grooved from wear over many years..and the diameter has to be measured carefully for a snug fit on the shaft.

Did you really gouge the crank?..which would be pretty hard to do..or install the seal improperly?..did you lube the seal lip before install?...you have been given several suggestions for repair before going the sleeve route..

Are you SURE it is the crank seal?

Small scratches on the crank, also I had to burn the seal out, but when I replaced it I was very genital, and used a pvc coupling the same diameter, oil and wedged it in there leaving a pencil lead size gap from the seal to the block surrounding the crank. Making sure it sat and went in evenly, maybe its not deep enough.

Again thanks guys for all of your help;)
