My shifter in my 93 is getting irritating at times.
just really gritty/grindy and sometimes a pain in the ass to get it in gear.
i really want to get it feeling good, and i realized it needs to either get rebuilt (new bushing and boots) after getting in my svtf and feeling how much nicer it slides into gear without any effort.
now i kinda just want to buy an ebay short shifter.
arent they all the same? they all look like the same one.
id most likely accompany it with a delrin weighted shift knob.
im just trying to find a cheaper route to getting it to feel a lot better.
cause im getting sick of it.
If your willing to spend a lil more cash go get a proper short shifter kit. The reason why your shifter is crap isn't because it's not short throw, it's because your bushings and jazz are old and worn. You can either buy a stock rebuild kit or get a short throw from Cobalt. I have one and it was night and day.
I installed a short shifter, its alright. Less arm motion when shifting, quicker shifts. Put the reason why you shifter is feeling like **** is probably because your boots are torn to pieces. I am assuming that your shifter has never been rebuilt and probably looks like the image on the left and it should look like the right
But don't go ebay man, just spend the extra 50 or so dollars to get a nicer one. Everyone I heard that installed an ebay short shifter went back to stock (or purchased a better one) in a matter of hours.
The lower boot puts spring pressure on the shifter assembly, a new boot should clean up the feeling greatly. Also, Motocraft fluid may help. I know this because I have the PITA MSM transmission.
You can buy s new bushing cup, a new center bushing and the other bits for about $40 and it'll make it feel like a new shifter. If you're getting tough or grinding shifts, check to make sure your slave cylinder isn't starting to **** the bed. Also, like badass suggested, change out the trans oil too.
A real short shifter can exasterbate any transmissin issues as you'll be able to put more leverage on the linkage and not really know it as you're changing the fulcrum point on the shifter. Otherwise it's a nice addition if you don't mind the increased effort of shifting and you're not having problems with transmissin/clutch. I had the KG Works one in my 96 and my 99 and loved it. Just make sur to get one that is a real short shofter and not some POS "shortened" shifter.
