The cam will physically fit. However, the '96 uses hydraulic lifters, where the '99 uses solid lifters. I suppose you could retrofit all of the hydraulic lifter bits to the intake side, plus the needed shimming and whatnot, but that's waaaaay too much work, time and $$ for the small gain.
So, as already stated, get a cam from a 99+ engine and go from there.
...or snag one of the cams from 949 that they sell for this specific purpose. More expensive in the short run, but it's a straight drop-in. Adjustable cam gear (or drilled stock gear) optional.
Anyone know if an exhaust cam out of an 03 would work? Seems to have similar specs as the Exhaust cam out of the 99-00. I have a set of 03 cams sitting around and a 99 motor going into my 95 project. Just curious? My research does not show whether they are a solid lifter or hydraulic motor. I am guessing they are a solid lifter car as well like the 99-00, but hate making assumptions. Are there any other reasons this wouldn't work?
Im using an 01 cam in my 99 swap. Make sure you get the proper lifter shims. They are available new in tons of thicknesses
