Default Carbon fiber maintenance?

Hey guys,

How do you take care of exterior (well I guess interior as well) carbon fiber parts? Can I use the same wax as the rest of the car, or is there a better product?

Thanks!

Greg

just keep it waxed, or else it turns yellow over time.

depends on if it's clearcoated. if yes, then you can use any kind of auto polish on it no problem.

if not, then kiss your new c/f goodbye. most places will have a clearcoat on their products, unless you specify otherwise when you order it, in which case, you'll know.

The yellowing is actually the epoxy resin in the CF yellowing from UV exposure. After it yellows, it'll get more and more brittle eventually cracking or delaminating from the CF strands.

If you have an untreated CF piece and want to clearcoat it, an easy way to do it is to put several thin coats of Future floor polish on it. Future is actually an acrylic solution (masquerading as floor wax) & will harden to a clear, tough acrylic clearcoat.
