Default Was my windshield trim installed incorrectly?

Just had a windshield installed in my 1990. The OEM trim bridged the gap between the windshield to the surround. The new trim has a gutter between the two and does not extend over the surround at all. I bought Mazda PN NA01-50-601A "reveal molding" and provided it to the tech. When I asked him about it he said that the wide part goes under the windshield. I never scrutinized the part before handing it to him and now its a little late because its glued in.

The surround was shot with Rustoleum and cut with 1000 grit. I sent the shop the same photo.

There are two types of trim. One that bridges the gap and one that sits beneath the window and looks odd in my opinion. I just had my windshield replaced as well and the guy let me look at both options to decide which one I liked.
