Finally got my first miata up and running. Went for a 70 mile drive with the top down and DAMN the feet/legs got hot.
Then I touched the carpet against the Transmission tunnel and it felt like it was 100 degrees. What can I do to reduce the foot well heat and transmission tunnel heat? |

^^that's a good, cheap way to do it.
You can also buy some Dynamat or a knock off brand and install that...it will even reduce the noise inside the car |

I bought Reflectix insulation at Home Depot and used that... Cost me $20 to do the ENTIRE cabin and I easily saw a 40+ degree reduction in temps at the footwell...
An In progress pic...

I've had it half way out and I would say no. The seats in an NA are an easy 5 bolts (NB are even easier with 4). Then you do the screws on the plastic door sill and pop the carpet off the pinch weld. And Then its 4 more screws to pull the center console. IRRC thats it.

![]() Something like this might help too. It's a Thermotec exhaust blanket. I'm using it on the back to keep my gas tank a bit cooler, but there's no reason you couldn't use the same thing on the front before the cat. Pair this with that inexpensive Home Depot insulation and you'd probably be at ambient in the footwell. |

I like this, I'm probably going to rock this kind of thing.
But I would like to know how thick it is, and if you guys had some problems getting the carpet back with this. |

Like others I've used reflectix inside the cabin and also added ThermoTec heat barrier (http://www.amazon.com/Thermo-Tec-135...xgy_01_01_t_lh) under the car around the transmission tunnel.

I'm not sure if you guys have ever noticed but the flap that covers the HVAC stuff in the dash never closes all the way. When it is put to cold the flap is still open a little and lets out hot air. Its a simple fix, just a little adjusting of the cable etc and the flap will close all the way and thus the majority of the heat problem will be gone. There are multiple threads on Miata.net regarding this.

I seriously need to do this. I've sort of gotten used to the heat since I've been driving 70 miles a day for the past year but everyone that rides with me for over 30 minutes says their legs are super hot. I'm just so lazy!

I didn't really notice I had this problem until I went on a drive up a really long steep hill. I was doing some spirited driving with a friend and even got to the point where my temp gauge started moving past 11.30 (first time ever!). That's when the heat really started coming through the footwells. I will definitely be adding some insulation soon.

I like both of these options, my car is so damn hot driving home. Living in Tucson, driving a Miata without a/c.... hmmm Seriously though a 40 degree difference? That would be sweet! Notice any noise reduction? I might just have to do the whole car..!

Today it was high 80's and I romped my turbo na for a good 15 mins and my feet were nice and cool. I'll also reiterate.. cool breeze scoop makes a huge difference in general foot well temp and feel.. |

I put fatmat down when I did the swap. The tunnel is warm, but what comes out the side of the car is MUCH hotter. Feels like a heater blowing in the window at the right speed because of engine/exhaust heat. |

This might not be what cny referred to but this is what I found on m.net about this issue: http://www.miata.net/garage/heater_cable.html And in one of those m.net threads, there was this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pFxWO...5&feature=plcp |

Now that its morning and I'm on a computer, I also have to say this stuff works VERY well for heat, but will not touch sound. I covered the floor and tunnel with this in the C5 and it made a HUGE difference in tunnel temps. If you guys think your tunnels get hot, sit in a C5 on the highway for a few hours. I wore pants so it wouldn't burn me. For the money, it can't be beat. I might end up layering this stuff on top of the fatmat since it adds next to no weight. |

I bought some reflective/heat absorbing, bubble wrap like stuff. Works pretty good. Though. I don't like the way it looks.
