It's getting around that time for many NA and NB owners to replace their radiators, so I figured this deserved a post. Quite often I see people buying all-aluminum radiators as replacements and paying a good amount of coin for them, despite not needing any of the extra capacity. Anyway, I paid $70 shipped (well, more like $35 after ebay groupons) for this.
(Aeon on the left, OEM on the right. Edit: This is after I swapped the rails, but trust me, the Aeon is as thick as the rail)
The unit is well constructed and drops right in. No cap is included, but the old one twists right on. I'd estimate it's at least twice as thick as the original radiator, and has the extra ports for automatic transmission cars if required. I flushed two gallons through it and collected it to see if there was any garbage in the radiator, but I didn't see any. There's nothing terribly exciting here, it's just a cheap, well built piece. In 20 years my radiator still hadn't broken, I figure another 20 years for $70 wasn't a bad deal.
Too true. Now only time will tell if this was a good deal. Which it seems to be from here.
I didn't really mind paying what I did for my Koyo, but this might turn out to be a decent penny pincher route aside from getting an automatic radiator from a junkyard.
finally got around to putting the fans on and swapping the parts on to the rail.
the holes for the 2 "mounts" were a little to small so i drilled them out a little bit.
other than that it's great.
Just received mine today. Construction looks good, and price was good. (even though they raised the prices by $10) Though I'm not quite sure why they have different prices and part numbers for the 1.6 and the 1.8 since they're interchangeable.
I was surprised to find out that they included new clip nuts to replace the square nut used on the OEM. The nut and bolts on the bottom of my radiator were completely rusted, and snapped off when I tried to loosen them. So one less thing I need to worry about.
As far as mounting. I have yet to do that, since I'm elbows deep into swapping out the head for a 99 head. So I'll try and report any problems that I might run into.
reviving this....How that Aeon radiator holding up?
It is now $61.90, cheaper than the amazon TYC 1140 Replacement Radiator. I cant find dimension details on the TYC rad so Im assuming its an OEM replica. I like the idea of a little extra capacity without having to roll the dice on a cheap Chinese all aluminum radiator.
I've had one for the past year. They have very good prices and they even let me pick it up at their warehouse and they didn't charge me tax. Cool guys, they looked like a bunch of car enthusiasts too.
The all aluminum radiators for $120 shipped are basically the same thing as the Mishimoto ones. So it would be more fair of a comparison nowadays to say, do I want a $120 all aluminum radiator, or do I want the $75 oem replacement?
My CX Racing radiator is pretty nice. It fit fine with the stock fans, except the ac condenser hit the fans, so I had to reverse the mounts or something to give it some room. It handles 20+ straight laps in 100 Texan weather with ease.
The only con I found for the eBay aluminum radiator is that on my NB the driver side fan assembly didn't fit very well.
I fix it by getting eBay radiator fans...
