Around one year ago, GarageStar redesigned the radiator cooling panel. Gone was the polished aluminum finish and the notch cut on the right side. What had replaced it was an anodized clear finish, which is easier to clean and less prone to marring when doing so.
Also redesigned was the hardware, which was updated with machined aluminum washers and mounting spacers to ensure it is bolted down more securely.
Alas, here it is:
The laser cut design fits perfect into the radiator cowl and the contour of the bumper in front of it. The 0.050" aluminum gives it a very high quality feel unparalleled by any other product currently on the market.
It is gorgeous, especially when the hue changes from a dark purple to a bright, radiant magenta. In addition to complimenting the engine compartment, it aids in cooling. In the 1989-1993 model years, the Miata did not come with a radiator shroud from the factory. The 1994 model year rectified that with a flimsy plastic shroud that was very thin and did not cover much surface area, which let airflow escape at the top instead of going through the radiator. The cooling panel diverts airflow by forcing it through the radiator, and not letting it escape.
The installation is simple, the two 10mm inner bolts of the front bumper are removed, then the two provided spacers are placed on top of the holes. The cooling panel is then placed on top of the spacers, and is finally bolted in with the stainless A2-70 grade bolts (allen key required).
This particular piece was specially anodized purple, but also comes in a brushed aluminum finish, powdercoated wrinkle black, and a carbon fiber model.
Many thanks to Ken at GarageStar for designing and anodizing this beautiful part.
