Hi guys. It was good to meet a couple of you from the Missouri area this weekend. Thanks for coming up and saying Hi.
Marty - it was good to meet you and your crew. So this weekend started ok. The car got to the track at about 9 am on Saturday - in the rain. My NT01s are pretty much slicks, so it was a little spooky until it dried up some. The real compeition for overall RWD looked to be a 550-600 whp G35 and a Toyota supra. So Sunday morning I turned the boost up to the level usually reserved only for the last timed session of the day. And now I know why I limit my time at that boost level. Coming onto the oval from the infield there is a good sized bump. well, I was in 3rd gear with my foot on the floor, and the rear wheels got light, and when the settled, all the teeth were sheered off the gear. I pitted to find that I could get the car into gear in 1st, 4th, and 5th. We changed the tranny oil, and it still sounded like it was full of gravel. In order to get points for the season, I took the car out and babied it around the track just to make sure I got a lap in. I was a little nervous of the tranny locking up if something finally managed to lock things up enough, but I decided to give it a go on the last lap of the session. In order to keep the revs up on the infield which traditionally used 3rd gear, I pitched the car in from the banking and slid the car through the first time with the rear wheels boiling to keep the car moving. not the most consitant way through the turn, but I was able to make it work about half the time. When the lap was over, turned out I ran a 1:09.399, which took the fastest RWD time this or last year. Thanks to Marty atleast offering his gearbox to me afte missing qualifying. I'd have taken it from him, but he decided he needed to leave early. As luck would have it, I didn't need it. With a good 3rd gear, I think we could have given the EVO's a run for their money at the top of the Modified rankings. I was only 2 seconds off them without 3rd, so its not out of the question. Next stop is Miller. I just need to put a need to put a new tranny, diff, and final drive into the car... Matt |

Thanks guys!
Yup. the 5 speed is going away. I have a built 6 speed in the garage with polished, shot peened and cryo'd gears. I would love the Quaife gear set. but they are pretty spendy. I'll try the 6 speed for now and see how it goes. I will be matching that with a cusco 1.5 way diff. I'm considering having the rear axles cryo'd at the same time but haven't made arrangements for it yet. |

Nice, I'm going to gateway this weekend for the NASA HPDE. My car's not as hardcore as yours but it's a turbo miata, mostly a track car. We'll see what sort of time I can run, it's nice to have a time to compare to.
I know what your talking about with the bump entering the infield. I ran the Roval at Iowa Speedway last April and it's very similar to Gateway. The transition into the infield was the trickiest part of the course. |

Congrats on the win. Sounds like your strategy paid off in spite of the worst case scenario. =D>
I propose a new rule. Every time you start a new post, you must include a recent picture of your car. Never get tired of looking at that. I've got to do something while my SR20 car is getting built. |

Thanks guys. Hopefully more miatas will start showing up at these things. They do allow cameras. And I had one. But I was pretty nervous about the tranny and focusing on makin gthis as right as they could be that I forgot to put it in the car.
can you spot the miata? Shows how little and low the car is in comparison to other things out there... ![]() I'm the guy in the middle. Some NOPI TV show was getting some time attack interview footage... ![]() And here is the only online shot I've found so far. I'm sure there will be more soon...

i run the driver 1/4 window to prevent buffetting that shows up without it. The passenger one is gone.
As for the headlight cover, the car was on a multicar trailer and loaded backwards. It flew off on the cross country trip somewhere. I guess they weren't designed to do 60 mi/fr backwards for 25 hours. I need to call and get another one. Anyone have their number? giggle- how much seat time do you have at miller? I haven't been there and am looking for either a way to learn the track remotely, a car I can rent before the event if I fly in for a HPDE weekend, or someone to play navigator for a while when I show up. Its June 27th - 29th for Redline Timeattack's next stop. matt matt |
