Long and the short, specifically looked for an R package Miata (to autocross in E stock), found one in Indiana on Craigslist, parents went and picked it up, got it shipped out.
After I got the maintenance and E stock mods installed I found out the rules were changing and the car would only be "good" for one more year of autocross.
I have parts (cylinder head, turbo, clutch, etc) that I have collected from my last Miata.
Its a '94 with ~130k miles. Everything is in great shape. Would it be "worth" it to someone to sell it and find another to modify?
If you can get a decent amount for it, sure sell. But if it's not going to net you enough for say another Miata with some caash left, I don't see any real benefit.
I don't think the introduction of the NB into E-Street will immediately render the R-Package obsolete. I'd wait until Nationals this year to see how it shakes down first.
What is your hesitation about modifying it? Limitation of the class you want to run in or the fact that it's an r-package? I say keep it if it's a clean car and do whatever you want to it.
I have a 94M that I'm sure the m.net people wouldn't like cause I've modded it so much.

We autocrossers are a strange breed, so don't think that just because a few hundred people who are crazy enough to stand around a parking lot for an entire day just to drive in circles around some funny orange rubber bits go nuts over your car means that it's worth a bajillion dollars. It might be worth more to the right buyer, namely a collector or something, but even to us it's diminished now that it's no longer the top dog in the class. The new unicorn is a 99 Sport. If I were in your shoes I'd probably run it for a year or two and jump ship to STS depending on what happens.
I think the allure is that it's the ultimate as far as a raw lightweight factory Miata goes, and that's worth something to a lot of people, but for the majority of people looking for a car like that it's much, much easier to build something similar, and it'll perform better than an R-Package in pretty much every way. Again, if you find the right buyer it could be worth a decent chunk more than a standard Miata, but that may never happen.
Some people who arent auto-xers still want R-packages as collectibles, but they have to be factory R's not converted R's. Mine's been crashed like 3 times and the rockers are completely rotted out, hence why I had no problem doing this to it.

Where would you find such individuals? Mine is a factory R per the VIN. Yea that's where I would be worried mine would go. Not sure if I want to rip things apart and cut things up. Might be better to get a base and add the torsen etc.
Have you read the other ones yet? I don't think English is their first language. I can typing.
I'd think a collector would have to be pretty desperate to want one with 130k miles on it. The only thing I'd want from one of them is the hard to find rear lip for OEM+ swag points.
I got modded my R instead of the original base model I had. I like it when people ask if its a real R because I get to hold my nose up and be all snobby, even though theres really nothing that special about it.
Mod it and have fun...
The Rs are the most uncivilized of the breed but they represent the best of Colin Chapman's "add lightness". And there were rumors circulating that the motors were blueprinted at the factory. As to collectablity, unless the car is ultra low miles, a special color, and/or model, there's not much hope, at least in the next 10-15 years. That said:
every miata know it all uses that stupid phrase "add lightness"
It's weight reduction ffs. How is it special in a miata? Just cause some socalled expert neckbeard weeaboo didn't know the proper saying for "weight reduction" doesn't mean we need to go around sounding like idiots
Its from a Colin Chapman quote, simplify and add lightness, worked pretty well for him as a principal engineer in F1.
Though the R is not the lightest miata, a 1.6 base model made in 1989 would be since it lacks all the bracing has the lightest diff, doesnt have a trunk release cable, and a host of other things including the 1.6 engine being lighter than the 1.8. The R package isnt even the lightest 1.8 car, that honor goes to a 94-95.5 base model because the open diff is lighter than the torsen and it doesnt have the spoiler and lip kit.
I don't see why not. Just like everyone is saying, it really is just another miata. And especially since it's all about the "race" aspect, you should be modifying it to make it more race worthy. That is indeed the point.
What I meant is that someone dumbass felt the need to attribute a F1 design quote to weight reduction on a miata like they are even close to the same thing. One corresponds to actual design, engineering, and building of a magnificent machine...adding lightness came from him REDESIGNING THE FUCKING CHASSIS. He didn't just pull random crap off and say "damn I just added some lightness to this bitch"
Hence: neckbeard weeaboo said to himself "omfg a quote about building F1 cars. Miatas!!!" and so the trend of using this quote for something so trivial started.
Err actually one of the thing's chapman was known for was removing a bolt, sending the car out for a test and if it didnt break or fall apart he'd remove another bolt.
but... miatas handle SO well and would beat anything in the corners. theyre the best at racetracks! the only way to make them better is adding lightness! which is nearly impossible because the engineers at mazda 30 years ago used the best technology available!
anyways, given the current fuckboi state of miatas, the only thing i would do to it would be proper suspension, tires, and maintenance. maybe some chassis stiffening stuff. then again, i like stock miatas for what they are and belong on m.net so i'm a dickhead.
.
As fer the slightly stiffer... what I said... slightly...
As fer the lowering method I'd swear that don't jive with what I'd been led to understand but then it's been a long time and stuff like that get more'n one theory espoused with so many sources that I sure wouldn't argue wid ya... and I'm waayyyy too wo out to try to dig anything up right now that might have been my original source be it right or wrong, or likely to in the near term so reckon I'll accede to yer assertion fer now... Discussing a topic that still has legs... Not to mention it appears that it has served the arguably worthwhile purpose of disabusing me of some misinformation what been rattl'n 'round in me lil ol pea brain all these years...
'sides I dint see no stink'n expiration date... '
The real question is... if'n ya ain't interested, how come ya be read'n it... '
