Default 1.6 to 1.8 Engine Swap

i posted this on the CR FB page but i think i would get more responses here.

Need some insight regarding an engine swap.

I have a 1993 NA 1.6 MT with around 240k on the original engine that has hot start issues and leaking oil.

I contacted PitGarage regarding an engine swap and they will do one for $1,300 for another JDM 1.6

I'm wondering is there a significant power difference between the 1.6 and 1.8?

Another local member states that he notices a difference when he traded his 1.6NA for another 1.8NA but when i called PitGarage to inquire about doing a 1.6 to 1.8 swap he immediately stated not to do it because you wont notice any power difference and just do a 1.6 to 1.6.

I'm not sure if it is the current condition of my engine or just because it is a 1.6 but it seems like i have a hard time keeping up with other cars on the road, ie. merging onto freeway on-ramps or changing lanes.

besides PitGarage theres also another shop in North Hollywood that does engine swaps. not sure if anyone else has used them, but they are much closer to me. ETA 10 minutes

The difference in Power is barley anything 5 to 10 hp I think. The difference is potential. If you are ever going to start trying to make horsepower, your best bet is a 1.8.

Ahh I see. So what your saying is the 1.8 is just a better motor to start out with if one were to do an FI setup in the near future?

Also I see that FM has the conversion kits for the 94-97 and the 99-00

Is there a difference in those 1.8 motors?

The difference in power is around 15-25hp depending on the year of the 1.8 you get. NB's had higher compression pistons and 140hp. The 1.6 also only had, 116hp/100tq?

We talked about this on FB. You can stick another 1.6 in your NA, but the 1.8 is just a better engine. And there is no replacement for displacement.

The NA 1.8 might not be a huge improvement over stock, but start modifying it and it'll easily outperform a 1.6. It has more torque down as well.

Now the NB 1.8's are a different story, since they get an upgraded head, higher CR pistons (the BP-Z3 engine had the highest CR, 10:1 iirc), and some other slight modifications. They can make 140whp or more fairly easy with N/A mods.
