Help a brother out here. What do you think the below is worth? I can price the body on ebay/craigslist but cant really price the lenses. I know there's a lot of photography gurus on here, so I thought this might be a good place to check.
The guy is an acquiantance of mine and we have many mutual friends. So I don't want to lowball him but I still want to get a deal. How much should I offer? Quote:

Don't get a D50. Do yourself a favor and get something newer.
A D40 or a D60 is better than that old monster of a camera. D40 is a real awesome consumer priced camera, you can find one on CL/ebay for ~$450. |

The D50 is the grandfather to my D80. So its an enthusiast priced camera when it first came out. It has more features and what not from the D40, but if you're just using a D40 for walking around with your girl and taking cute pics, then that camera really does it's job well. D40 really is a good camera, I cannot stress that enough.
But if you feel like you'll actually get serious about photography, then save up and get a d80 or better. |

Honestly, I dont know how "in" to photography I'll get. But my point-n-shoot died on me, so the only camera I have now is my blackberry. That doesn't really cut it. Seems like a convenient excuse to buy a DSLR, and it looks like a lot of fun.
It seems to me like the D40 and D50 (and even D60) are priced very similarly. I dont think I can justify the cost of a D80 right now. What to do? Is the D1 like the grandfather of the D50? |

I also like the thought of buying from someone I know, rather than a random CLer. Is there any particular reason the D40 would be better? Seems to me they would both be good beginner cameras? Is the D50 physically bigger or something? Wouldn't the D50 be "better" since it has more features?
Thanks dudes, you guys are great. |

Here's a review of a straight comparison between the D40 and D50. D40 kills that grandfather shit out of the water. And the D1 is the grandfather to the D3 haha
