I say bottom one, with the blues desaturated a bit.

top one works better overall for me. the image is too grainy to have as much saturation as there is in the bottom one.

So we're split, 2 like the top and 2 like the bottom, I've always been a big believer in how subjective photography is but it's cool to see it 50/50

16bit, your lip/canard/headlight combo intrigues me, got a link to some pictures of it?

I think I like the top one. For some reason, the colors on the reflectors in the bottom photo stick out too much to me.

it doesn't look like that anymore. i got rid of the carbon and the canards. But here are a couple of photos of it in that state.

Low light attempt. Still a little grainy. Should have done a longer exposure with tripod.

Wow. Shocked at the blatent racism.

Might as well say that all black people are fat people that eat at mcdonalds everyday because they are too poor to afford real groceries or an ID to vote, and live in neighborhoods where, that if they even had money, no fresh foods are available to purchase.

Ok I have a real basic car photography question. What kind of set up do you need to get this much bokeh with the entire car framed in the picture?
http://cdn.stanceworks.com/wp-conten...hina-flush.jpg
I've been trying to achieve this effect with both a 50mm 1.8 and 55-250mm without much success. With the 50mm, I have to stand pretty far back so I'm loosing the narrow dof. The only thing I can think of is to push the distance between car and background back more but sometimes thats not possible. The 250mm I have doesn't have a very wide aperture so it didn't work very well either. What should I be trying? Do I need a wider lens? Please help.
http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/e...IMG_1307_3.jpg
This is the best I got with the 50mm wide open, and there really isn't much bg blur at all.

yes, but the stanceworks image has way more bokeh, which I'm having a hard time producing. Any tips?
http://www.stanceworks.com/2011/10/s...-mini-clubman/
how are these guys getting that much bokeh while still framing the whole car???

you should be able to get the same with both lenses, obviously the 50mm would be easier to do it at f/1.8.

I'm sure the stanceworks page is some $2000+ f/2.8 zoom.

So is it really just a difference in equipment? The above pic I posted that I took was at wide open with a 50mm and there is hardly any blur. Would standing closer to the car with a wider angle lens help? Or is that not going to work at all?

try focusing the lens, in manual mode, as close as possible to maximize the bokeh, then move forward/back to set what you want in focus.

Wouldn't you need something a little wider than 50mm?

Those stance works circle jerk pictures are taken through a 70-200 2.8. This effect is achieved at max focal length wide open

Bokeh is harder to achieve at shorter focal lengths. As Nate said, that could be taken at 200mm f/2.8, but you can get similar results with other lenses.

Both Canon and Nikon make an 85mm f/1.8, which is reasonably priced, and Canon also has the 100mm f/2.0, which I have and love. Definitely gives that background separation. http://www.flickr.com/photos/danvala...in/photostream

Also, you want the distance from the background to your subject to be much greater than the distance from the camera to the subject.

I specifically tried this shot at 300mm to get some DOF, problem is I shot at f13.0

Depth of field depends on 3 variables (that I'm able to think of right now):
1. The lens's focal length.
2. Aperture.
3. Size of camera sensor.

It's easier to obtain narrower DOF on a full frame sensor camera than on a cropped sensor camera. So the stanceworks shot must have been shot with a full frame camera with a long lens and wide aperture. Although with a FF camera it's possible that he could be using a 50mm lens and be achieving that type of DOF.

My picture is framed tighter but I had a pretty narrow DOF with my Canon 60 and Sigma 50mm @ f/2.0 in this picture.

I guess the f5.6 at 250mm and standing too far back with the 50mm isn't going to work. Time to look at that 100mm. Sounds promising.

This shot was taken with my 35mm f/1.8 @ f/2 with a good amount of distance between the subject and the background:

This one the planes were closer to the car but still pretty good separation imo:

wouldn't a crop sensor work in your favour as it lengthens the effective focal length?

A good cheap offering from Nikon is the 100mm 2.8 Al-S E-Series lens. I got it a few months ago for around $60 shipped on eBay. It's stupid sharp for the price. I highly recommend it.

No, because it lengthens the EFFECTIVE focal length, not actual focal length, which forces you to increase camera-to-subject distance.

yeah i like it that way.. there was lots of ambient lighting from the strip mall, so it's a toss up really.. i think the blue hue makes the chrome look better and works in this situation... the fact that it was at 1600iso doesn't help the colours either.. had to underexpose both shots 2 stops because i couldnt figure out how to boost iso higher haha.. was using my friends old 5d classic
