I knew this parts guy who worked at my local Harley dealer whose kidney was so totally calcified that they had to remove the whole thing. 3 meals a day of bacon, sausage and ham will do that to you.

Hopefully living on hotpockets and beer for YEARS didn't create a few stones in my kidneys. Time to add something else to my hypochondria list.

Piss through a strainer with gauze to catch the stone, thats if you can pass it. If you catch the stone, the doctor can analyze it to find out what caused it.

Drink lots of cranberry juice and water always from now on to keep your kidneys flushed

Hooray for hospitals. Just got a call, monday is the pre-appointment. And it's at 10am. Or so I thought. The meeting with the Dr is at 10. I have to be there at 8: 30 to meet the nurse practitioner now. And then the Dr, and then after I'm meeting with anesthesiology at 11.

Apparently the actual procedure is on the 29th. I asked the caller if they know the time.

"As of now...."

What the fuck do you mean, "as of now?" I need to schedule this. I'm not ever one to say this, but I'm kind of a busy person, and I need all the facts straight so I can go ahead and be unprofessional with everyone else in my life by rescheduling with them now.

I don't have a problem with the hospital dragging its feet. I'm not dying or anything. I also don't have a problem admitting that I don't know what needs to be done over there to prep me for this procedure. What I do have a problem with is being fed all this disinformation, whether it be intentional or not.

Cliffnotes: Thought the procedure was on the 25th at 10. It is now pre-procedure, and I have to be there at 8: 30. The actual procedure is another day now, at a vague time I can't depend on, and I'm frustrated with not being given all the facts before I organized my schedule around this.

That seems very strange that they can't give you a set time. I'd take my "business" elsewhere if you can.

I have insurance with the hospital, so that's not an option. The rescheduling is already done, and I'll be missing less days of work with the new appointment, so that's good. As long as they don't let me bleed to death, I'll be happy(ish) with their work.

It's alright. I'm not in any pain right now. I mean, of course I can feel the stone, it's like a bullet in my back. But it's a very old bullet, and I'm used to it.

Once it's over, I can get back to my weekly exercises and be able to twist my torso like I used to.

Once the stone is out, the pieces will be analyzed in the lab to figure out what compounds it's made of, and then I can figure out what caused it.

I've had two. First one was painful but not as much as the second one that was too large to get pissed out.

Well, here we are. The wife and I are here at the hospital, waiting to take some more xrays and for me to get put to sleep. Oddly enough they tell me in rare circumstances the kidney could suffer enough damage to require a blood transfusion. That probably wont be the case, but it doesnt stop me from thinking about it every once in a while...

I too have had kidney stones in the past, had lipotripsy once as well with success. The doctor told me that your pee hole can expand to the size of a standard pen so passing a stone that's in your bladder is not typically the most painful part. However the ureter that goes from your kidney to your bladder is the size of a linguine noodle and that's the hard part. I feel like most people assume that its extremely painful to pass the stone and that's never been the case for me. Mine looked like those sand spur looking things too.

Just food for thought

Well I hope all goes well for ya sounds like they have it under control. The blood transfusion won't be too bad. For words of encouragement YOU CAN DO IT!!! note that this was said in the Rob Schneider voice.

Thanks guys. I'm home and alive, but I feel like I've been beaten up.

The procedure was a success, but there's still fine particles to pass, so I have a stint in me for the next week. Feels like I've got the clap. In terms of pictures, I wont have any champ shots of the stone, and I'm pretty sure you guys don't want to see a toilet bowl full of blood, so here's a few pics of me in some stylish garb.

You know you like it.

As a side effect of the anesthesia, I am very nauseous. If I move too much I need to puke. Thanks for the words of encouragement though guys, it's only getting better from here I think.

As an ER RN, I can tell you that if it's taking a while to get you back to a treatment area it means there are sicker patients back there that we're already treating. If you present like the fella that Chris mentions below, you'll get Triaged at a higher Acuity & treated a whole lot lot quicker. One of my best feelings as a Nurse is taking a Pt like that, giving them a little IV Toredol, maybe a little MS & watching them relax like I've tapped them with a magic stick. Makes my job really worth something.

Now, if you're rolling around just acting like you're in pain to get our attention...that is, if you're pink, warm & dry (not sweating up a storm), we'll be looking at you just as closely. What ever else you do, though, don't mention that you're allergic to every known pain med except Dilaudid...

I met one of my closest friends in college over a kidney stone. One afternoon during some of my first days as a Freshman, I was studying in my dorm room, the door was open (natch), and this huge dude falls/leans on my doorway. His face is all grey, he's sweating, and he's just blankly staring at me. I ask if he's OK. He says no and that no one else is in the dorm and that he thinks he needs to go to the hospital. No second thoughts, I grab my keys and off we go.

I remember him screaming on the ride over. Good times.

Chris
I can still see memories of Pts like you described that I've taken care of. I really like it when I can get them to the state LuckyE85 is in the 2nd pic.

Glad to see that you're getting back to a good state, LuckyE85.

Recovery update:

After the anesthesia got out of my system entirely, the nausea went away 100%, so that's definitely good. I've been on painkillers, but have since dropped down to the less potent stuff as of last night. I'm moving like an old person and I still very much feel that damn stint, but I should be well enough to make it to work tomorrow.

Thanks for the support guys. Ill probably give an update once the material properties of the stone have been analyzed.
