Default The watch thread!

One stop thread to discuss watches, watch fashion and everything about watches.

I'll start it off with a confession, the only shopping and looking I do with utter joy is watches. Whenever I'm in a town with some time and I see a watch shop I enter it, and ponder around.

At the moment I can't afford anything new yet. In the meantime I'm window shopping and looking around for that perfect strap.

freedomgli posted this neat list;

If you want custom leather straps there is a small cottage industry making them in the USA, Europe and Asia to fit most popular watches with 22mm, 24mm or 26mm width lugs.

Current watch (which I got off my late grandfather, bought new by him in the late 60s early 70s it seems)

Omega Seamaster Calender
Mechanical watch
18mm size strap, looking for something new. Currently on a plain black leather strap with stitching that match the face colour.

Most of my watches are cheapo quartz. The only of value is my Oris F1 Nico Rosberg which is pretty low brow compared to what you're rocking.

Not mine, but looks the same (minus the engraved number)

I bought this one in 1985 (when I was 15 years old) and wore it every day until mid 2009. It's been through lots of adventures and all over the globe. Despite it's dogged look, I'll keep it forever. It's a Seiko 7a38. It's the last Seiko Chrono with all metal gearing and has a fair cult following. The all black face including the date windows is somewhat rare.

I replaced it with this early '70s Seiko 6309. It's actually the best parts from three watches matched up to a later Seiko Oyster band. These usually come with a rubber scuba band. This model with the comfort case is a little unusual in the USA, and is even more unusual with the all black face and ring combo. Mine was originally made for a French speaking market - maybe Vietnam, maybe France. The lume on both the face and the hands is original and in GREAT shape. FWIW, that's not my skinny wrist in the pic.

I'll most likely buy one of these hipster things. Luna-Tik.

Yep, watches are okay. Hats and sneakers and jeans, too. Unfortunately some threads were mistakenly trashed in the great cleanup of 2011 but it is okay for you to create a new one so long as it remains civil.

This brings me to watch fashion.

There was a spell of HUGE watches, and the medium big watches have taken there place it seems.

I've tried a few on and I'm not sold. I have a BIG wrist. (191cms, 120ish kgs and a big frame)

They just don't feel or look right in my head, height and diameter kill some watches for me.

What's your thoughts?

Personally I like 38mm-40mm diameter wrist watches myself. My PAM00112 is 44mm and it seems huge to me but I'm a big guy and can pull it off just fine. Plus I simply love the dial and crown guard and overall look that the size doesn't bother me too much. 46mm-50mm watches just look ridiculous. They say that rich folk are moving away from the large flashy watches back to more modest sizes because of the economy. I know it makes no sense and people should wear what they like but many people incorrectly assume that a big watch is an expensive watch when in reality some of the most modest looking watches are the ones that cost a fortune.

Here's what I normally wear, was a gift from my fiancee, she got it because she said it matched my car:

I like it because the face isn't too large and it's light and thin overall.

I love Skagen watches because they are so light and thin. I constantly bash my watch on things so the smaller the better.

I love watches , but never really got into them because I have the wrists of a 12 year old girl.

I bought this one in Bermuda back in 98 on my honeymoon. I liked the blue face and how simple it is. It's pretty much my all around dress watch.

Got this one as a gift 2 years ago, a friends wife works for Tag, I haven't sized or worn it yet.
