Thumbs up Replacing those pesky upper ball joint boots how-to!

Here is a little tutorial since i've never done it before , so if anyone else is as nervous as i was ... you can follow these steps.

Make sure you have:
30mm 12 point socket
Good grease
Vise or C-Clamp
Some good lube for outside boot

First off, get your new boots , and tired old ripped ones ...

Put in vise, and get flat wide chisel ... Go in between the boot and the actual ball joint. Nice and easy all the way around.

Shortly after going around, it should pop off ...

Remove junk boot and clean around the mounting surface. ( i left some factory grease in there because they were okay. only the boots ripped )

Now get your socket, and lube the outside of it ... that way it will slide out of the socket easily with no tearing . At this point, i put some grease on the ball joint stem and inside the boot as well.

Now push the socket with your hand, and line the ball joint stem up into the hole in the socket where the ratchet should be. Make sure it went down evenly.

Now its time to put it in the vise, and tightly very slowly making sure the stem is lined up inside the socket and going around evenly. I gave mine a gentle but firm tightening , then backed off.

If all goes well like it did for me, you should end up with this ... and no more ripped boots

Where did you get those boots! I've been searching everywhere and I couldn't find them. Of course mine are lower ball joint boots so they may be different, but maybe the same place would have them.

Boo. I completely forgot about this when I changed my springs and shocks. I would've been half way there.

Can this be done with the control arms still on the car?

It'll be more of a pain and you'll want to use a c-clamp instead of a bench vice.

I've decided that since a used control arm goes for ~$50, I'll just replace the whole arm since my boots have been torn for a bit now. Can't be that hard, right? Unbolt upper strut bolts, unbolt lower strut bolts leading to the lower arm, unbolt 2 bolts on upper arm and voila?

So I received a used UCA from Planet Miata today and the boot seems to be in OK shape. However, I was told that if you have the UCA off the car, the easiest way to tell the condition of the joint is to move it around. A healthy joint won't move easily whereas a faulty joint will. My joint doesn't feel like a limp noodle but isn't exactly difficult to reposition either.

Also, would it be wise to replace the boot on the used arm before installing even if the boot looks like it's in relatively decent shape? (and by relatively decent, I mean not-ripped). I have a spare boot but I'm wondering if I should save it for the other side's UCA in case that one rips.

If you don't have a bench vice, I good pop or two with a hammer will also seat them. If you feel like it, kill two birds with one stone and get an axle nut socket. I just did mine and packed them with a little extra grease to compensate for any loss. Excess will just squeeze out when you reinstall the arm.

I thought mine would rip when I put new shocks in my 2001. They did. So I ordered new ones from the local dealership. They were like 12 bucks each. I tapped mine on with a socket and a small hammer. Just make sure and use plenty of grease. Excess with ooze out and you'll have a packed ball joint.

okay, i'm having trouble taking off the old ripped boot. I have a 12mm chisel, kinda similar to what's picture, but I can't get it between the ball joint/boot for the life of me. I ended up ripping the boot to the mounting point. Tried to use needle nose pliers to pull some of it off the lip of the mounting point, nope..didn't work.

Any advise? I'll take pictures tomorrow.

Any chance you could cut it? Maybe with dykes or a new razor blade? do whatever you need to get them off since you will be installing new ones. Maybe you could use something sharper such a screwdriver instead of the punch?

I cut off as much as I could...it's not as pretty, but I still got the replacement boot on. I just hope it'll hold. I squeezed the vise pretty tight until it wouldn't move either. Hopefully the other control arm doesn't give me this much trouble. Thanks anyway though!

And thanks for the write-up as well...wouldn't even have thought of doing this until I saw this.

Sorry to bump an old thread but where did you get yours?

I'm looking at the part numbers given earlier for ES and neither of them say Miata on the application list.

In case anyone doesn't have the exact size sockets... I found a couple of white PVC fittings at Home depot that were the perfect diameter for all of the front ball joints. The boots went right on with a light tap from a hammer.
