Damn that looks clean! Before I can answer your question re: what color valve cover, I need to know more about the rest of your car. Personally, i think it would look nuts to chrome plate the valve cover, the IRTB intake manifold and air horns. Paint the throttles whatever color your car is if you don't like the cast aluminum finish mixing with all that chrome.

No chrome.

Definitely thinking black, and filling in the lettering with gold. The FM kit is already sold to a co-worker, and I'm kinda sad to see it go. But NA is my thing, so I'm going back to it. This engine is just a stand in until I can build the 2.0 NA stroker that is ultimately planned in the future.

Here is the car:

Not feeling the black with gold inlay on a red car. My car is red and honestly I think the only thing that "works" is to keep it simple and let the details do the talking. Paint the valve cover silver and keep it clean.

Thats stupid clean. I would powdercoat the valve cover red, along with the throttle bodies, and have polished velocity stacks. It would match the car the best, and you could drive around without a hood and it would look perfectly normal. :-D

chrome with red letterings, chrome ITB setupi with anodized red throttle plates... maybe ano-red velocity stacks too

then strip the cams, and make then ano-red too.. as well as the other pulleys.

chrome oil cap.

That's it right there. Although I'm having a slight issue. No hole for the PCV valve. I'm thinking I can run it off of the large tube on the front. Maybe run a couple inches of hose off of that to the valve, then route the tubing after that as normal...

That's what I did with mine. I have a pic in the garage of the engine. I also routed it through a separator to keep oil out of the intake which made it slightly easier to route the tubing. I have changed it since the pic, but you get the idea.

You don't want to do a 1.8 swap since you're pulling the motor anyway? Interesting.

For me, if I were to do an NA build with IRTB and engine management... I'd just drop a 1.8 in.

I was going to say red or gold, then I saw the black protege one, and that is the bomb!

That engine is looking great!

This is my temporary engine (hence no internals done or rebuild) for now. Once this one goes in, then it's time to start saving for FM 2.0 Stroker w/ 11:1 pistons.

What's funny is that was the original color of the valve cover. But, the black was a sort of crinkle coat. I'm going to do mine gloss black.

Gotcha. Well, that is a very nice temporary engine.

I noticed yesterday that using the GTX valve cover causes a problem for using the factory coil bracket. Anyone have any solutions for this? How hard it is to convert a 1.6 to coil on plug?

I think someone has figured out how to do it. more difficult than a 1.8 COP though. I have also seen the stock coils mounted on the fender linder with longer custom made wires hooked up to em. Think they used a v8 kit for two sets.

That's probably what I will end up doing. Just mount them to the firewall and use longer wires.

I demand I test drive it during the FM Open House. Maybe it'll influence me to not FI my NA.

Valve cover is done. Went with black crinkle coat, then painted the lettering myself and sanded down the lines by hand. Sorry for the bad pic.
