Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

Megasquirts have always had launch.

Ryan, given the amount you've ran on track with no test pipe, it's quite possible your resonated mid pipe was burnt out. Ask Nial how easy it is to do that.

Oh it's surely louder just not by much, anyway isn't the resonator just some Swiss cheese metal? Is it typical for that to blow out?

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

Thursday was a disappointment. As I pulled into the paddock after tech, getting ready another BMW HPDE, I cranked on the steering wheel and got a loud clunk. Which then resulted in the steering wheel being uncentered to the left by about 1/4 of a turn.
History of the rack; depowered, FM style with seals removed, instead of a welded pinion gear it's press pinned. Poly superpro bushings, and aluminum spacers to aid against bump steer.

Before I get into the rack, what could have caused this? Btw, I sort of re-centered the NRG hub and went out for 2 cautious sessions with no issues.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

Sitting next to a pretty little RS with 600 miles. Already getting taken apart for upgrades.

Ian, Martin, Eddie, and Josh at AR all looked over my car today sort of scratching their heads as what could have caused this steering issue. Someone on mt.net asked if maybe the alignmemt bolts slipped. Apparently it's not unheard of, FM even developed eccentric washers with teeth in them to prevent this. So we checked that, but it didn't seem to be the issue. So I guess I gotta tear the rack out and inspect. OR just look for a replacement, maybe go back to power steering now that I'm on sticky 225s instead of 195s.

Still shopping around for Rotrex install parts as well.

Swap in new manual rack from Mazda motorsports for piece of mind? Not necessarily the cheapest route, but a steering rack is definitely something you want 100% faith in.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

Thanks Ben.

Spoke with 503Garage, he's got a PS rack/pump from a NA8 and possibly a NA manual rack too.

With the NB motor and NA chassis, which years racks are just bolt? Looks like only NB racks with NB sub frame so that's a no go.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

You're going down the same route as the oil cooler though. The little stuff can get spendy quick. We have all the oil cooler stuff, but if you're adding back PS, why not get a real cooler for the PS, and custom fit lines to/from the rack and pump. With the NB engine in the NA car, I'm not sure how well all the stock stuff will fit. Plus since we're fitting an intercooler with a heavy focus on ducting and fitment, we might have to take up any space the stock PS cooler wants to occupy.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

I dont think the stock stuff will have an issue fitting. But if you are adding more coolers ducting and placement gets annoying and difficult.

I'm thinking Rotrex cooler in the driver's fender well, identical PS cooler in the passenger.

I did that with my car. I fit a decent sized oil cooler, power steering cooler, intercooler and bigger super charger oil cooler relatively easy in my nb. I don't know how much more room i have compared to a na though.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

With ducting from the gv lip inlets? would be sexy.

I've never liked putting stuff in there because i do so much offroading. Not sure what its like with fender liners.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

He has no fender liners.

Re: Oregonmon's white 1990 (now with VVT swap)

Slippery slope with swapping subframes/racks. The NB rack and accoutrements are "better", but increasing at a decreasing rate. Except for all the little dollars that **** you.

PS cooler a necessity?
We made a Nissan to Mazda PS hose so I could keep power steering. I'm so glad I did. Such a brilliant rack. Using the stock cooler though - maybe totally different than running 9" wide "hate-me" rubber.

Would definitely like to see your setup sometime over beers though.
