Default R-gruppe style MX-5

I figured I may as well start one of these so I can have all my photos in one place. I'll throw in some of my insight as to why I chose to do what you all might think are non-traditional mods for a Miata.

I bought my '91 B package in 2001 as a Bday/HS graduation present to myself. I know most of you don't like red, but that's what I wanted since I think sports cars should be red (Ferraris & 80s Porsche 911s).

Here's the starting point.

At one point, it had 17 inch Enkei ten spokes on it. It was autocrossed until one day, I spun out on a wet, leafy road and broke the rear wheel and some suspension bits. It's been returned to stock specs since 2004 until I got rear ended by a truck.

In the meantime, I bought a Porsche as a DD and left the Miata scene. I then stumbled onto Pelican Part BB and found out about R-Gruppe (early 911 owners who modify in the spirit of the factory lightweight specials...I.E. R, ST, TR & the RS).

Got laid off in 2006 and sold the P-car...Fast forward to 2008, I get a crazy idea about modifying my Miata again in the spirit of the early 911 longhoods...

We'll pick up from there.

I then dusted off a spare set of Altezzas that I purchased from Brainstorm and hadn't used since 2002 & painted it red (my 911 had US spec red taillights with no amber, so my Miata won't have amber as well).

Plus, if it didn't turn out as I would've liked, I really didn't lose anything...

It actually turned out quite nicely. Much to my surprise.

I found a rare photo of my car with the soft top up!

I then bought a hardtop for $550. And deleted the Miata badge.

The soft top was then removed to save some weight (it's an RS theme after all)...

Got an R package manual steering rack, because I missed the feel of my 911...

Tokico Illuminas & springs. I know it's not low enough for most of you, but I didn't want it to be slammed...Plus it was cheap.

I think I would have left the reverse light area clear (IS there a reverse light in the altezzas?) but I really do like the all-red look for them. Well done.

I then got NB wheels because they remind me of Porsche Cup IIs. I also sold the BRG Hardtop and bought a nice red one for $600 (including a hardtop cart and cover).

...I know, Minilites style wheels would look more retro & would be in keeping with my early 911 theme, but there are lot of you guys out there with those...

Cup IIs

The interior was next to get some attention. My steering wheel was falling apart, so I got Momo Prototipos (a popular R-gruppe mod). My wheel was made in 1985 and came from (you guessed it) a P-car.

I also traded my '91 door panels for the '94 panels without the armrests...

With the parts installed.

Revlimiter, there is a reverse light for Altezzas, but this really was just an experiment that turned better than I hoped for. lol.

Those seats look oddly comfy; personally I'd want headrests but I can imagine how goofy they may look.

Next you need a roll bar

I have headrests. I just removed them for the 2 interior shots. And yes, they are comfy.

They'll have to be recovered sometime in the future though. And yeah, I will need a rollbar, but I've blown my budget for the year unless I win the Lotto.

Leatherface - I actually have an AK ducktail trunk that I have yet to install. Besides, if I wanted to go to an all out coupe, I'll just buy another 911.

Sell the Autokonexion trunk and grab the YSCC ducktail that's in the classifieds right now. It looks much more Porsche, and it'll keep me from buying it.

Ding ding ding! You are partially correct. They are Raydots, which are Raydyot replicas, the originals have the 2nd y.

FYI, there are many vendors that sell Raydots. The above is just an example.

There's a write-up about how to make the base somewhere on here or M.net (I honestly can't remember which).

What´s going on here?

I like your way of thinking alot. But I dont really like the wheels as if your trying to represent a old skool RS (or 964rs?), I think smaller, lighter is the way to go.
Had a P cars too and also been thinking R/RS stylish build, less is more way, simple door cards, no bs interior, hard top, no pas, e/w or a/c, just K.I.S.S.

It's been quite a while since I've updated this. Anyway, I now have a '96 1.8 in it (no pics yet though).

From a 914-6 GT. There's 2 versions, Scheels or Koenigs. I've never seen the two side by side, but they look identical to me. To answer the question, I bought mine used from a Pelican.

Anyway, here's a new pic of my interior. (I know, I still haven't re-upholstered the seats...in due time)

Thanks. I've got plans for a new top...

How did you get those mirrors mounted up? They look sweet.

It's just a matter of custom mounting plates and countersunk bolts. Fairly simple. Ovals with holes in 'em.

I also needed larger holes on the doors (the bolt holding the actual mirror is longer than the base). Though, I don't think that would be a problem if you had started with power mirrors...

Also keep in mind, it's a PITA to readjust these things as you have to remove it from the door and loosen up the bolt underneath to adjust it. The convex mirrors help a LOT though as it's practically a fisheye.

I hear ya. Minilite style wheels would be the period correct way to go for an T/R, ST or RS Porsche, but I feel like there's a lot of Mazdas out there with those.

Anyway, I still like the Cup II style wheels that my 15 inchers are substituting for. I can definitely see why you're thinking 964 RS...I love that era as well.

RS Watanabe's would set this off nicely imo.
Maybe an oem front valance as well.

Either way, I really like the direction in which it's going.

No new parts...Since I just had the 1.8 swapped in and had all seals, timing belt & water pump done, I'm in no hurry to buy at the moment. I do, however, still need to get a new set of tires...

Anyway, here's photo updates in case anyone is interested.

My Borla cat back exhaust. I think I completely forgot to say anything about this when I got it a couple of years ago...I bought it from a PCA racer who had stored all his toys (a '72 911, a SWB 911 (pre-69), and an NA spec Miata).

Here's a closeup of my '85 Momo Prototipo.

Taking advantage of some nice lighting provided by a late afternoon sun about to set behind me.

How did you get your seats to fit? I tried a fixed back seat from an 70's porsche on my black NA and it went way too far forward to make any mounts work.
