Default Matt's Slocar ( Ecotec Miata )

So, figured I would start up a build thread since my miata will be undergoing some very very big changes in the next few months. Iv'e had the car for about 2 1/2 years now. Started out pretty basic and crappy when i bought it.

Did a few ricer mods to begin with, plastidip wheels, lip, and the whole nine yards lol.

Then i kinda toasted the clutch. that plus the bad valve seals and health of the 1.6 motor, decided that a 1.8 swap would be a good idea. spent about a week pulling the old motor out, cleaning / painting the bay, and putting the new 1.8 in. Had to wait on some parts, and go back to school for a semester, so the car sat mid-timing belt swap for almost 4 months.

Last summer, got the 1.8 running right after some wiring issues. Picked up a hardtop and some other small things.

in the past couple months, finally got some Jass lopros and APR mirrors.

And that brings us to today.
Decided i need more power. found out the 1.8 i put in was a bit low compression on cyl. 3 at about 135, rest were at 160ish. so didn't really feel like slapping a turbo on a shitty motor, just to swap the motor soon after.
My work just happens to have access to pontiac solstice and saturn sky parts, so when i saw the ecotec swap kit i was hooked. Plan is to have the car pretty much put together before the big miatapalooza meet in April.

so far iv'e ordered a flyin miata happy meal, full set of control arm poly bushings, and a racing beat sway bar to accompany the swap. Waiting for a good compression, low miles LE5 motor to come through to buy the motor. Should be ordering the swap kit next week to allow for the lead time. Gonna pair the motor with a stock 6 speed trans for now. with the header / intake and tune, I'm aiming for about 180-185 whp with similar torque. I'll be documenting the rest of the build here, should be a fun project for this year.

the parts ordered list continues. Got some used 15x8 6uls for spares, gonna throw the 205 nt05's onto them, and get some 225 for my 15x9 TRM's.

Also ordered some dope R theory endlinks and a v1 rear diffuser.

Very cool ... I'm going to sub this thread.

The Ecotec swap guys are near my brother in law ... I keep contemplating a road trip up there to install some parts

Car's been sitting for the time being. made a few big orders, most notably the swap kit. hopefully it takes the advertised 4-5 weeks to ship. Still need to get my motor and 6 speed purchased and ready for install.

Also started looking into exhausts. currently planning on a 1320 slingshot header, custom crossover pipe. the catback is where i'm undecided. either gonna do an off the shelf 2.5" miata exhaust, or a custom 2.5" exhaust built to fit the r-theory diffuser with the tip integrated into the diffuser.

crossover pipe ideas. most likely end up with a vband near the flex joint and a vband where the catback bolts up.

Also ordered some small bits needed for the swap, Cadillac cts pedal, and a corvette fuel filter / regulator.
gonna be ordering new inner and outer tie rods to get my suspension work finished.

starting to get all my parts orders in!! hopefully be working on the car soon. Still waiting on a low mileage ecotec from my work and then we'll be all ready.

Got my complete swap kit.

Super impressed with the quality, really nice billet flywheel adapter

Also picked up a HDHCDD roll bar. although its not the Hardtop version, my buddy has the same bar with a hardtop and no rubbing issues.

And got my helmet / glove setup for Autox. Had to keep it super hotboi

I had that exact non hardtop version of the rollbar and it rubbed horribly, to the point that there was about a half inch gap in the seals around the rear of the top. Just something to keep in mind I guess, they might differ from bar to bar.

Really liked my 15x9 TR c3m's but needed a change lol. put the old 205 nitto nt05 in these 15x8 6ul which are about 3lbs lighter a piece. gonna keep the old wheels and eventually put some 225's on em. or just buy 15x10 jongbloed and get 245's.

Should be getting a 65k mile LE5 this week to get the ball rolling.

got the motor all pulled out at work. car had a damaged harness in the wreck. As well as a bad starter so havn't been able to compression check. will be getting a new start this week to test it before officially buying it and getting it ready. Although it did only have 65k miles, as well as some clean looking oil and spun smoothly by hand.

Also ordered a swap specialties harness for the car. Decided I didn't want to deal with the hassles of slimming down the stock harness, especially it had some damage. and this one wasn't too expensive

well its been a slow month of progress since Iv'e got university finals for this semester coming to a close. last update I ordered the swap specialties Standalone harness, which you guessed it, still hasn't arrived. Hurrah for me. Gonna try contacting them one more time before just cancelling the order and dropping the extra cash for the alphafab harness so i can get the ball rolling. Bought myself a carbon fibre hardtop spoiler in the meantime.

well after waiting 2+ months, finally got a tracking number for my swap harness from swap specialties. Trying to keep the miata up and running for as long as possible until starting to the critical swap modifications on the car. Still have a few things to sort out fitment wise. still not sure if my cxracing radiator and slim fans will clear the relocated racing beat sway bar since the stock bar already rubs the fan shroud. Last resort i can go down to the slimmer koyo rad and run 2 10" spal fans with a custom shroud, Really don't wanna cut corners with cooling since I do plan on doing some track days. We shall see when it comes time tho. hopefully gonna get a workspace figured out soon and start working on the donor motor to get ready to drop in.

For what it is worth I have read the Ecotec runs 15-20+ cooler than BP motors and don't normally have cooling issues like the BP. Obviously CONFIRM for yourself but I have taken a keen interest in these swaps and easily my favorite in terms of hp/$ value.

Well finally got my harness from swap specialties. Hopefully gonna get started prepping the motor this week. Gotta decide if what I wanna do with the stock miata harness since the swap harness has provision for fans / fuel pump in the integrated fuse / relay box. Since the car is still mostly a street car I don't wanna get rid of too many of the stock functions.
