I can't lie, in my 10 minute search, the Prototipo struck me as the wheel to get. I noticed that it comes with either black or white stitching, no red? Kinda trivial, but I was hoping to get something that matches with the red stitching on the seats. Definitely not a deal breaker, but kinda' a downer...

Well, Monday night before I went to sleep I noticed that the local PnP had 2 Miata's on the lot. So Tuesday morning I dropped everything to scavenge what I could off them before they turn into carcasses. I picked up a straight trunk lid for $35 & 3 window/door trim pieces for $15. Why 3? One of them had the tabs ripped off, but it was in good condition otherwise. Either way the 3 I picked up are in far better condition than what's on my car now. I'm having a shit of a time sanding off the clearcoat on the back of the trunk - the stuff does not want off. I'm using 80 & 100 grits & doing it by hand with slow results. The paint on the top of the trunk was already faded & the clear was gone so sanding was a joke on that.

Pics of my booty... not what you think, pervs...

I smoothened out the tails/rear panel & sprayed a layer of primer, waiting for it to dry....

I'm no graffiti artist, but my spray can skill jumped like 10 points since I started this project.

Totally spoke too soon....

After spraying the tails I had an alligator looking pattern emerging from part of the tails & finish panel. After some more sanding (sigh) and a few coats of primer & clear coat I can now say I am 100% freakin' done with these tails/finish panel.

In between waiting for the coats to dry I finished prepping the PnP trunk & spraying it. Turns out my new trunk isn't as straight as I once thought. Unfortunately there's about 6 or 7 small hail dents that I didn't see until I sprayed the first coat of primer. Oh well, even with the dents it's in better condition then the one that came with the car. Either I learn how to do PDR, or I work it in the deal when I get the car painted professionally. I'm not sure if they shows in pictures.

I'm soo used to seeing the car all taped up & under drop cloth, it's weird to see it like this...

I feel like all I've been doing is updating this with the same pics over and over. I can't tell you the elation I felt when I pulled the tape & plastic off for (hopefully) the last time on those tails. I really can't believe that they're done. This was a hell'uva monster project for me, I totally pushed the limits of what I thought I could do. If anyone out there wants to do the same conversion, hit me up if you want assistance. Finishing off the bodywork seems like a piece of cake now...

Got done with the rear 3/4! It's not perfect, but I'm no painter. I had huge runs in the clear that I tried to wetsand out, you can definitely see them... anyway pics...

One from a quick cruise to Starbucks...

I'm gonna commence bodywork next week, I need to rest & drive while it's nice outside...

Best DIY taillight mod ever.

I'd love to see a photoshop of the rear panel in all black or just the light housing in black.

Not really "build thread" content, but some small vids on people I respect greatly when it comes to cars & car philosophy. It's an attitude I'd like to share on a scale that's not quite as grand. Click on the links below & take notes, I think there's something important we can take away from their words. I highly encourage anyone that stumbles through here to at least do yourself a favor and check them out...

I talked with Stoly earlier this week & he told me about a little drive out in the hill country he's planning on Sunday. Sounded great, but with the weather out here this weekend, there's a good chance of rain. Being the awesome guy Stoly is, he let me borrow a hardtop so I could make the drive. I drove out this morning in the 40 degree slightly misty conditions & picked it up. While I was there he took me for a quick spin in Flipper, which is lookin' (and driving) really nice!

Also while I was there we did a super quick photo shoot with the 2 cars, here's some of the highlights... BTW - props to Stoly on the pics, just about all of them are ones he took, my lackluster photo skills are definitely not up to par (my skillz' is the 1st two pics).

Yes that's Stoly, droppin' it low...

aaannndd...

My favorite

Can't wait 'til Sunday for the drive, I'll take my camera & capture what I can...

BTW - my thoughts on hardtops... They kick ass!!!! The car is sooo much more solid! I've only driven it from Stoly's house to my garage, but it feels like a totally different car. I gotta get one of these!

It's comin', it's comin' (isn't that what she said?)... Actually it's still sitting in the box in my entry way. If I can get a few hours away from the kitchen & the girlfriend, I'll try to get it on. It's just sitting there, enticing me to get it installed with it's swan song...

Wow, thanks guys - I'm seriously flattered!!! Honestly, it's not that difficult to do yourself. If you have some free time to dedicate to it, it can be done. It all spurred from wanting the GV tails, but not having the cash to actually purchase them. Seriously, if 'yall were to do them & need assistance, definitely pm me or something. Knowing what I know now (and shared on the build up), I imagine it would take roughly a couple of weeks (tops) spending about an hour or two each day.

Anyway as promised, below are some pics from the drive to Lime Creek Road with Stoly, Yellowihss, Lime-Light, Nohaven, and Nannerpus. Seriously fun times. I was holding up the rear end of the pack with my "slammed" status. I was scraping along a large portion of it (quite literally) & nailed a huge dip that sent my car airborne (pretty sure). Luckily the only carnage was a spark plug wire popping off the coil which we found when we pulled into the park area to snap pics. Running on 3 cylinders is all fun and games until you need to get up a hill. Note to self - raise car before making that drive next time. Seriously, I can't wait to do it again!

Meeting up in Austin...

Quick video rollin' out...

Stopping at the park for pics...

yeah, this is the entrance to the boat ramp - drought much?

The end of the day at Bikini's for food & drink...

As I said, great times, great times...

Thanks bro! I don't drive the car in the rain, but I did get caught in a shower on Friday leaving Stoly's. I was a bit scared that I might have leaks, but I checked it all out when I got home & absolutely not a drip in the trunk & no water inside the lenses. I did a few tests when I finished building them with a spray bottle & I didn't find any evidence of water anywhere then either.

I remember the look on your face and the gawd awful sounds your car was making as you pulled into the marina... thought to myself, "Oh shit! We've done broke a Miata." Thank god it was only a plug wire or we'd have been there for hours trying to whittle down pieces of trees to help ease your car onto a tow truck...

Well, I've somehow been nominated for "ride of the month" at Miata Forumz for April. I am actually really honored that I'd get nominated for anything... If you got a chance this week, check it out... I think voting ends on the 24th...
