Default Painting my car gray

It's still under construction, and it's taking a lot longer than I expected. So far I've repainted the headlight lids, front bumper and fenders. I'm using Krylon Smoke Gray and you have to buff and polish the shit out of it to make it look shiny.

Here's a few before pics:

And here's how it looks right now:

I'll post more pics as I make progress.

Yes sir, it is. I'll paint the hood this weekend... and I'll try to borrow a better camera. My cell phone's camera sucks.

That looks pretty darn good. I just Krylon'd my car and it did not come out near that well.

I've been using a rattle can on my car too. Just a question? Is there clear coat on that? and did you wet sand the last coat, or left it untouched? Any tips will be appreciated.

No clear coat yet. I'm thinking about using clear coat once it's done, but probably not. It'll be easier to repair, touch up and repaint if I don't use clear.

Yes, after the third coat, I wet sand with 1000 grit and then 2000 grit. After that, I use Turtle wax rubbing compound to polish it. After two or three coats of rubbing compound, it starts to shine pretty good.

When spraying, keep the nozzle about 4-5 inches from the car. Use quick strokes.... coat the whole thing with left-to-right strokes, then go back over it with up and down strokes. Let it dry for at least 3 hours between coats. If you get any dust or debris stuck on the paint in between coats, you can sand them off with 2000 grit, but make sure to clean it off really good before the next coat.

Smaeda, what kind of paint are you using? I used Kilz on my first attempt, but it turned out pretty shitty. Krylon is so much better. It doesn't run very easy and it's a lot glossier.

i used duplicolor. After I sanded it 2000 it looked very flat, so I started using polishing compound on it which brought back the gloss. The problem I'm facing right now is the clear coat I sprayed. I didn't realize I sanded it completly off in some places so the gloss is uneven. I guess I will have to re-clear it now. Thanks for the tips. Your paint job looks amazing.

Looks great! =D>

Any plans for painting the hood? Matt black would make it look tuff.

Grey or sandy beige are colors I would consider painting my car if I did it again ...

So I did the hood yesterday... I took it off the car so I could do both sides. When I put the hood back on, it wasn't adjusted and ended up scratching the headlight lids and hood a little bit. It's ok though, it took me about 2 minutes to touch it up. If you look closely at the pics, you can see where I touched it up. Also shaved and polished the turn signals... they look better than new now.

I used a much better camera this time and the pics turned out pretty good.

This weekend I'll do the trunk lid and finish panel. While they're drying, I'm gonna polish the hell out of the front. It looks pretty good right now, but after this weekend the front should be shining like a new car.

I'm thinking about pulling off the wheels and painting them. Seems like they're going to clash with the finished product (gray car, tan top and interior and black wheels)

What color should I paint them... if I paint them? Or should I just sand blast them and then clear coat them? Or maybe I could paint them bronze to sorta match the top?

Your thoughts and suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

No. For now, I've been removing parts from the car and painting them under my porch in the back yard, to cut down on dust and debris sticking to the paint. I'll be painting the doors, rear quarters and window trim when I can borrow someone's garage for a weekend.

keep the wheels black, paint the windshield frame black and you have a winner.

if you must paint the wheels, I vote for bronze.

Smart choice polishing those turn signals. Before that, it made your new paint look old.

Yeah, that's kinda what I was thinking. That's why I went with the black top. And if I paint the windshield frame black, might as well paint the mirrors black, too. Eventually, I want to get the Autokonexion front lip and rear trunk spoiler along with a ratsback rear skirt... all painted satin black.

It shouldn't be off center (I used the holes that Mazda put in the bumper), but it is upside down. I didn't notice it until I put it back on to the car and I don't feel like pulling the bumper off to fix it. I should have filled the holes before I painted it.

Which paint? Rustoleum?

I haven't used clear coat yet, but I'm about 90% sure that I'm not going to. I figure that if I do clear coat it, it'll be a pain in the ass to touch up the paint. I had to touch up the driver's side fender and headlight lids after scratching them when I put the hood back on the car and If I'd clear coated it, it would have been a lot harder.

Yeah, but they're heavy... and I don't want to fuck them up by dropping them. The only friend I have that's willing to help me with car stuff just moved to New York.

I actually used to have a Fox... It sucked so bad! It was rusting to pieces and it would only shift into reverse about 1 in every 100 tries. Sorry to all you VW guys, but I hate the way v-dubs reverse. I'd sit there trying to reverse for like 10 minutes to pull out of a parking spot...

I'm glad that thing is gone. I started upgrading the brakes and it never worked right after that. Miata's are so much nicer and they are RWD. FWD is wrong wheel drive and tons of push come corners.
