OMP removed? might need to add 2 stroke oil to gas... might explain funny looking fuel tank.
also, remove exhaust, hand crank engine and check all 6 apex seals are still in there. or just check in your muffler can, j/k lol

Not much been going on since I found where I was leaking coolant.

Instead of buying OEM replacement headlight lids for $300 I found some frog eyes for 1/3 that.

But that's about it for now. I have to figure out if I want to tow it to a garage to get it on a lift, pull the trans, replace the freeze plugs or tension bolt orings (whichever is letting coolant by), or do it at the house and pull the engine/trans combo.

That leak is not a joke. Are you getting a new clutch/light flywheel/counterweight too while its dismounted? Motor mounts?

Don't know yet. Just trying to get it back to running condition. Don't want to do any power mods or anything, just want to fix and drive for a bit!

Ecto-Your drive train better include a rotary in it or I'll tag you in every last meme of ls swapped or any motor swapped FD I find to remind you what your missing out on.

At whinin, I totally understand that you just want to get it back on the road but if it's out, save yourself some time and get it done. That's twice the amount of downtime and less driving.

Well that answers my question. Your not a true enthusiasts and will be deemed as a step child like the rest of the swapped rotaries. Your banished.

i hope you're being serious because i sprayed my keyboard with coffee when i read that.

i wouldn't bother claiming relation to "enthusiasts" in the first place. those are the types of people that start facebook groups and make lifestyle brands like fatlace and RWB famous. they're also the guys that use the term hater in total seriousness.

i worked on rotary-powered cars for a job. i don't hate the engine, i'd love to build a miata around one, or find an SA/FB and build that. but when it comes to an FD, i'd rather spend $2-3k on a clean roller than $10-20k for a complete car, put my stuff in it and have that power ready to go instead of starting over.

The only thing about building a roller up is getting parts. Sure you can get used but after so many miles and being heat soaked they become a unreliable and fail. (Mazda related parts for the rotary) As for having a complete car, I bought one untouched besides a full rebuild of plates and rotors etc from the all new parts. The first owner really took care of the car so I practically inherited a great vehicle. Yes it had 125k but I got it for 16k. I wanted to drive and enjoy it and not have it just sit like most other FD's. I've already put 18/19k miles on it for 15 months.

As far as my original comment it was sarcastic to the part where enthusiast comes in. I honestly believe in what made the rx7 an rx7. That means motor and all. I don't dislike swaps but when I walk up to a rx7 with a swap motor nothing impresses me about it and I walk away. I can only say great job on the effort. But the community is split on the matter and you already know that. They either make you a stepchild in the subject matter"me and half the drivers" or embrace swaps like any other rx7 since it's the shell and platform that counts. So don't take me too serious. Just an opinion.

Yeah, I'm looking at rebuild prices with an aggressive street port, not too bad. $2700, and you know the motor will run extremely well. Add shipping to that, and I won't even be close to $6k invested. I may end up doing that. I bought the car to fix and sell, hence why I just want to get it running, have my fun with it, and sell it. But, being reasonable on the rebuild prices, I may go that route. I have to decide.

Going to be working over the next month on my days off getting the engine out of the car without a lift. Car sits on gravel, so being on my back under the car will be uncomfortable. Should be able to lift the engine out with a helper once I get everything apart, you think?

On the rebuild note, I think I am going to try and do it myself. It can't be any more difficult than rebuilding a piston engine, could it? Take it apart, measure tolerances/clearances, replaced what needs to be replaced. Get a template to do a DIY port. Should be pretty easy I think.

I realized this morning that I can lift a Miata motor by myself, I would imagine a rotary would be lighter.

Incredibly jealous of you and this car!
I've been dying for an FD recently.

Is this a RHD import or has it been swapped?

Almost have it out. Got just a few stubborn bolts left on the trans, and one that decided it was destined to remain on the exhaust manifold. Taking a break till it gets back warm. In the mean time, I picked up a pineapple racing idler pulley, to take the damn air pump off, and also got some interior bits that were broken.

I've got no compression on 2 faces of the rear rotor, but all the seals look like this?

But I think the inside looks trash, this is the front housing

Tried several ways to un stick the apex seal. It moves freely with a magnetic tipped flathead, but once pushed in it stays. I think the seal spring is broke. So looks like I will have to rebuild. I am weighing my options. It will either be an at home rebuild with a diy port, or if I don't feel like doing it I will either send it off or purchase a new motor.

Apex seals, long and short springs were ALL out of spec. Still going through measuring other seals/springs, but I am planning on getting the B rebuild kit from Atkins. Housings are good, rotors are good, plates are good. Planning on stock clutch with a lighter flywheel and counterweight. Already have the OMP block off plate and the other kit from Banzai.

To think a year ago I didn't know shit about rotaries. I may not know everything now, but I know enough to get it running again.

Cleaning the carbon off the rotors. Letting it soak in simple green for a bit, then a brass brush taking most of it off.

I know it's a 20B, and I'm not a huge rotary head so I don't know a ton about it besides how they work, but I sat here and watched the whole thing. The guy seemed to know a lot about what he was saying (idk), so thought I'd share it.

The company basically does custom rebuilds for, mostly 3 rotors, but really any rotary (I think?). Thought it was interesting watching him do the whole thing.

Yup, I've got 3 videos saved for when I re assemble it.

So as it seems this car sat with water instead of proper coolant, and it caused a lot of corrosion on some parts. Right now I am sourcing a water pump housing, a few of the hose barbs are fucked and I need to replace it.

I got the housings cleaned up today. Going to go with a metallic black/gold/black theme. Also ordered some aluminum intercooler piping and intake piping. Slow and steady she is coming together.
